What's your first memory of playing pokemon?

binging a playthrough and making it all the way to cinnabar gym in one day before burning out from a crushing migraine

As a kid, I got Diamond on my R4 card and played throughout the whole night
>>
playing for 8 hours, didnt know I have to save, so I played from beginning again. I was 10y old so that didn't bother me.
>>
My earliest memory is hitting my gameboy because I was convinced it was alive and could read my mind so I would mentally threaten to beat it up if it didn't catch a pokemon for me first try. Every time a pokemon broke out, I would assume my gameboy was mocking me and hit it, especially when the pokemon kept breaking out after I already hit it.
>>
>>58881163
I'm sorry for your parents.
>>
I didnt know english back then so I cried whenever I knocked out a pidgey or rattata because I thought that it meant that I caught them. And I didn't want to catch dozens of the same pokemon. Eventually my dad read the manual and I think it mentioned that you need pokeballs for it that you get after delivering the parcel. I stopped crying after that.

I don't remember a whole lot about my first Crystal save file, but I do know I picked Cyndaquil. Then I rolled credits, restarted the game and picked Chikorita and that's the save file that stuck until the save battery ran out a decade later. I traded and battled with some kids I knew who had a link cable, I even got a GS box-cloned event Mew and a Gamesharked Celebi. I would have been around 8 years old around Crystal's release, and that was the newest game at the time when my family finally caved to my whining and got me a Game Boy (Advance). I have far earlier memories of seeing friends play Red/Blue on their Game Boy Colors, though. The envy within me was suffocating.
I also have memories of some weird-ass bootleg PC Pokemon game that for the most part seemed to work like an RPG like the official games and had random battles against wild Pidgey and shit, but most of the graphics assets were ripped from actual promotional art rather than being low-res pixel art, and you were definitely playing as Ash with Pikachu as your Pokemon. I only remember seeing this once at a friend's place, but I've never heard of it since and I'm left wondering if it was just a childhood dream I eventually mistook for an actual memory.

Watching the anime, loving it, then begging my dad to buy me a gameboy. He got me the bundle with Yellow, and also Silver. It was then that I realized Gen 1 is fucking shit and quit after Lt. Surge’s gym, but I ended up loving Gen 2.

i would always play it outside for the sunlight for the early gba with no backlight. it always felt so immersive i remember ingame being in a little patch of grass and flowers on a cliff outside a cave and there were clefairy spawning in the grass patch and i remember feeling really serene. Another memory is my fucking evil cunt neighbor asking to 'borrow' my sapphire game, which i let her because i was a nice and naive kid, then she never gave it back and when my parents asked her parents for it she lied to them all and i never got it back. i hope shes a bloated corpse in an alleyway by now.
>>
Time to out myself as a zoomer.

My mom let me watch a lot of the Pokemon anime since I was really, really young. When I was around 5 they bought me a DS and a copy of Pokemon White for Christmas. My brother got Black and he picked Snivy while I had Oshawott. He was always ahead of me and helping me beat the gym leaders. He beat me in almost every battle we played together. I would love to play another Pokemon game with him someday, but he grew out of it, unlike me.

>I overwrite his save and he gets really mad
>aunt yells at him in front of everyone
>for the rest of the visit he ignored me and pretended I didn't exist
>few months later
>we visit my aunt's house for Christmas
>he continues pretending I don't exist
>wouldn't even let me watch him play his new games
>>
Yellow version on a Teal colored GBC when I was 5-6 years old. I remember being stuck in Red's house for 2-3 days but for some reason my tiny kid mind didn't lose interest and kept playing until I finally and accidentally walked up to the carpet spot in the house. Rest of the journey was magical and I guess it got me hooked on the franchise for life
>>
I had a gameboy Advanced SP and my older cousin asked if he could borrow it while he lived in my grandma's house for the moment. Apparently he still had his cartridge for Crystal and could run it on the gameboy. Some months later he left the house and left the gameboy there with the game and that was the first time I played a pokemon game. I didnt know English at the time so I could only use the first member of his save file which was Graveler but I couldn't make out what he was from the back sprite until I found a Graveler myself

I don't remember what happened first, but I'll try to post them in what I believe is correct order. I went to my friend's house after first grade and watched him play pokemon blue or red on his gameboy (not color). he wasn't very far in, I think he still had a level 20ish raticate. He let me run around and do a battle or two.

My first time actually playing, my [older] cousin let me borrow his yellow version that was all the way up to the Elite 4. he specifically told me not to save, but I couldn't beat the Elite 4 with my shitty skills, so I went to the Power Plant and caught Zapdos with his masterball, and used it to get to either Lance or Blue but I couldn't beat them but had saved right before (and multiple times since getting Zapdos), and so when I gave him the game back he was super pissed. To this day Zapdos is still one of my favorite legendaries.

Me being a tard of a younger brother at the age of 5 and making fun of my older brother unprompted (age 7) for not being as good as me in Pokemon Red (he never was a gamer and didn't care much for the ip in general) and he smashed my gameboy and cart and told me "how's that working out for you"? He also beat me up a lot but I don't have some fake ass memory I'm pretty good at recalling earning an ass kicking most of the times we got into it by just stirring shit or escalating conversations like a tard.

Only core memory from my Red Playthrough back in 1997 is how I could never pass through "zoo" portion. I never could get surf.
So I asked my friends who lived over the country by standard mail how they beat it. (I was not a english speaker, but I was a clever child, but somehow never connected missing teeth with HM)
I got answer after a month. I was so happy! I could finally beat the game.

First memory of playing Pokemon was buying Yellow and a GBC after our neighbourhood did a street sale. I pulled in just over $100, enough to buy the GBC and guilt my mom into buying the game. That store is long gone, but a 2011 potato cam managed to capture the old game section and the same glass case I gleamed at back then. picrel

I still remember booting up for the first time and being roadblocked by the hungover grandpa. Solving the oak parcel "puzzle" with just my kindergarten-level literacy was huge. Then getting wiped by the rival rematch. Catching a Pidgeotto and making it my main. Getting stuck on Brock. When I finally clutched victory with a cheese critical hit with a level 2 Nidoran male. ("What do you mean it's not very effective? The attack beat him!") Never trained Mankey, didn't evolve for Butterfree. Just brute forced my way past him.

First memory of Pokemon was sometime late-1997, after the Porygon incident. I remember my mom asking me if I knew what Pokemon was, and seeing Pikachu on the page. I think it was in "Tribute", that freebie magazine from cinemas.

Honestly a ton. Been a lifelong Pokemon player since RS, and a general fan even before that
>my friend showing me Silver and how you can go to Kanto.
>us pretending to be Ho-oh and Lugia
>the countless replays of Emerald using my Gameshark to try out different teams
>getting a Gorebyss while my friend (different from above) got a Huntail. He laughed at me but I got the better Pokemon imo
>first shiny in Diamond (a Wingull) while doing the classic "play DS at midnight on a school night and hide it under your pillow."
>riding to Gamestop with a third friend on Platinum release day expecting a line (and maybe some girls), only to arrive at an empty store and no wait at all.
>trying to make a serebiiforums clan with another friend during the BW days
>playing with random people at the college lunch table during XY with PSS
>getting a shiny in USUM after 8 years of nothing
>grinding legendaries in Dynamax Adventures while subjecting my online friends to Tibetian throat singing playlists don't take that as me liking SWSH
There's a ton more but each is a story.

in 1999 France, my parents bought the blue version on release for my green gameboy pocket. I got it from a small supermarket that no longer exists nowadays. Played it nonstop for hours every day especially in my grandma's house. Some of my best memories.

Getting filtered by nugget bridge rival battle as a 4-year-old who could barely read and getting my mum to help.
I think she ended up playing most of the game and I only run around from time to time getting lost or battling huge numbers of wild pokemon with her lv 80+ Zapdos until I run out of power points
>>
>traded myself a Tauros from Blue version to Yellow version for the starter Pikachu because I couldn't beat Brock with him
>proceed to Stomp Brock's team in with an overlevelled Tauros that would barely listen to me
>spent the majority of the game like that until I got the Eevee and evolved it into Jolteon because I missed my Elec mon
>became my Ace that actually listened to me until the Earth badge
>can't remember past that

i remember receiving pokemon red and a berry pink gbc as a birthday gift from my grandma in the 2nd grade. the pokemania craze had completely swept my school, but my family was dirt poor so my mom kept trying to temper my expectations by warning me not to expect anything that big. i'm still not sure how grandma made that magic happen. i was so overjoyed tho, i remember playing it nonstop for the rest of the day, getting just past the cerulean city gym. my wartotle was my pride and joy.

the next day, my little brother started crying that he wanted to play, so my mom made me give him a turn with it. in the span of like 30 min, he replaced dig with withdraw in my wartortle's moveset and burned through all my pokeballs. i had a meltdown about it, and it drove my parents to save up for over a year so they could buy him his own yellow gbc and pokemon yellow.

It's been a while but it was either on the playground when my friend let me play it for a bit, or on an emulator my dad set up on Windows 98. I have a very specific memory of getting really frustrated trying to catch a Rhyhorn in the Safari Zone and asking my dad to help me. I'd also ask him to open up the Pokedex for me because I could never remember which key opened the menu, and I'd spend hours just looking at all the sprites.
I was only 4-5 so I dunno if I was even able to read any of the info, but I know for a fact that it gave me a huge love for video game bestiaries that's lasted my entire life.
