A thread for the creation and discussion of fan fiction and other fanworks - anything that involves a story and/or reading. What've you been reading? What've you been writing? What would you like to see more of?

>Thread question:
How do you name your characters?

Don't worry, I intend to link it here when I start posting in earnest. I already post nearly all my stuff to ao3 and I'll probably post to FF as well. I've heard Pofag got some good responses on QQ so i might look into some other sites as well.

>>58886619
I usually just look for names that sound nice. If they're a relative of a canon character I try to find a similar name.

Honestly, there's no reason at all to not post your stuff on all sites. The more exposure and the more eyes it reaches the better.

It's just Spacebattles that allows NSFW.
It's as much of a porn site as AO3 is.

A new chapter of In Mine Own is out.

Back home, rested and recuperated, Kuzey heads to the hospital to ask his Aunt Bounvialle the questions that have been lingering around their family, and to learn the secrets of just who Operative Seringue really is.

(Also, keep an eye out for the special cameo for The Strongest Pokemon of All!)

>9k words for new IMO chapter
You've been rather busy IMOanon.
Obligatory "we're really about to have three chapters from threadfics posted in one day." What the actual fuck?
>>58886705
I have more engagement from QQ by itself than the rest of the sites I've posted on combined. They seem to like their Pokemon fics. Also I think having a few chapters done before posting is good as it lets you fix any logistical problems you may run into that need fixing. Maybe "logistical" isn't the right word but you probably get what I mean.
>>
>>58887255
Yeah and thanks for the heads up Pofag, but yeah I figured that out recently, it's why I'm writing the first 5 chapters before posting to various other sites. I already had to combine the second and third chapter and shifted around the appearance of the initial antagonist.
I think the first 5 is a good metric since that's usually the time I'm willing to give a fic to sell me on it's pitch. So I wanna be able to introduce Rhys, the general goings on and the initial conflict. But yeah I might end up updating my story today as well if I can get the current draft of Mahogany chapter 2 to where I like it.

Alright I've updated it, the current draft one is a revision of the 4th draft, while the new and current chapter 2 is a revision of a first draft after scrapping the old 2 & 3, and gluing them together. The first chapter is mostly unchanged aside from editing, but there is a small detail I added to the end of that chapter you may want to check out.
Anyways I need to take a nap before my eyes start hurting.

Hilariously enough, Hyde’s name was made during the part of development of PoPT where it I was trying to do “Sengoku Jidai but on an island,” and the names represented that. Ian Cougar being a Tokugawa Ieyasu reference (name change included). Guzma’s last name is Doa (basically Oda Nobunaga). Hyde is a reference to Akechi Mitsuhide. Tom the contractor go being a Toyotomi Hideyoshi reference, etc

to sell people on it
>He, as a male elf, was normally slotted in somewhere between femboy, twink, or duckold. Male elves usually got in the way of the protagonist charming elven women, after all. Limp-wristed, reserved, arrogant, usually somewhat dextrous and magically gifted at their best. Sometimes they were yet another 'woman' interested in the designated protagonist, for the somewhat niche homoerotic appeal.
>Naturally, he wasn't going to tolerate that. Every other elven male seemed content being losers who focused on grace or sorcery or whatever. Wizards and duelists, who wielded devastating magical spells and swayed like willows to avoid mountain-cleaving blows. Lightly armored, with lean builds and arrogant sneers that devolved into incoherent outrage when they were inevitably defeated by some plucky young protagonist spamming his starter-attack over and over at them.
>He, on the other hand, was going to hit things in the face very hard, and laugh when things hit him very hard. He was going to wear heavy armor, use very big weapons, and throw himself into danger with absolutely no regard for potentially wasting a thousand-year lifespan by dying young.
>>
>>58889062
Isn't all that just a japanese stereotype? Like Tolkien's elves despite being beautiful are great warriors, or in WHF and FR
>>

>A self-insert as an elf into what was clearly a setting for someone else's lame harem anime.

>>
>>58889082
>Unfortunately, the archetypal elf has been somewhat diluted from the golden age of Tolkien, and a brand new archetype had taken shape in the far East, that of the Anime Elf. The Anime Elf was still long-lived and beautiful, and usually had a talent for magic, but they had a number of other, less agreeable traits.

Elfs in Pokémon sounds like a good concept, their world is a good mix between nature and progress, also since humans living hundreds of years outside of Az's "immortality" is a thing now and the usual time fuckery you won't have to worry about lifespan

Chapter 7 of Crystal Light: Royal Chartreuse

https://archiveofourown.org/works/63406333/chapters/206365451

The Warriors of Light have much to celebrate in the aftermath of their battle in the world of nightmares, but Wol struggles with the costs of victory. But a victory is a victory, and the celebrations of a grateful kingdom do good for a guilty heart. Still, the future seems more uncertain than ever as our heroes return to Corneria Kingdom to close the book on their first adventure.

Crazy that you post a picture of a Final Fantasy elf within hours of me finishing a chapter that heavily focuses on the elves of Final Fantasy. Then again, these elves aren't the immortal kind. Hell, Final Fantasy elves seem to die a lot.
>>
>>58889062
To continue the Final Fantasy elf rantings, my favorite depiction of elves is from FF 11, in which the elves are gangly monstrosities often compared to giraffes. Their long limbs have granted them the highest strength stat of all the races, and before guns were invented they sword and boarded the entire continent under their military might. The generic fantasy kingdom of knights are the elves, and the humans are more akin to what are generally the dwarves territory of digging in mines and using technology. This also means that the elves also get all the dogmatic christian like religious practices. They got an elf pope.
>>
>>58889370
>my favorite depiction of elves is from FF 11, in which the elves are gangly monstrosities often compared to giraffes
Oh, so that's where the Elezen came from! Anyways, I always wanted to write a story with an elf acting arrogant about his magic and long lifespan just to fall in a cultivation setting and have some elder call him a fag because a thousand years old junior DARES to think he's hotshit. Probably won't write it tho because Frieren is a thing and now people want autistic elves acting like kids

How do you feel about robots? Specifically humanoid ones
>>
Silver eyes has gotten a bit boring but I did enjoy the author whining about people not liking his plot armor Green tournament win
The proceeding cry session felt somewhat forced and wasn't nearly as enjoyable
And then the whole "Yeah remember that side character with the Charizard well he got bleachscoped offscreen lmao" killing Petrel sidequest was stupid. The cringekino edginess has gotten oversaturated and lost it's charm on top of such a big plot point of tracking down and bringing Petrel to justice getting poofed into smoke with "yeah we already knew where he was or something because I had Domino who hasn't shown up in like 10 chapters track him somehow and then we fast traveled to his location on the map just don't worry about it lmao"
>>
>>58890479
Although I haven't read Silver Eyes, Petrel. How dramatic he is in Masters, how self serving his "well I'm a nice guy" attitude is, and his tendency towards disguises.
>>
>>58890462
I don't recall them being done in any particular offensive way. Turo and Sada AI was a fun plot development.
They aren't done often either so I think anyone working to implement a humanoid robot into their story probably has a fun idea planned. Or it could be a cookie cutter robot battle algorithm

>Reborn in another world as the son of a pokemon during the Kanto-Johto war
>Lucario wife teaches him aura powers
>Ash shows uo
>Parent pokemon is either a Gardevoir, Zoroark, or a Lucario
>Human father betrays him and villain captures his poke-mother
>MC's knowledge of being half pokemon and being an Isekaijin allows him to fill out the rest of the bingo.
Wait, isn't that just Yellow/N. If it was started on SB it would 100% a man reincarnating into a female N.

Unless it's one of those 'im the female twin of said character' fic. I can totally see someone writing a story of an fem si girl bossing and defecting from Plasma because Ghetsis is so evil and grooms children and we can have pointless melodrama when she feels bad for leaving N behind.

dogshit redditier opinion. No one thinks your interesting for giving confusing and historical names to pokemon. Most people won't even know what pokemon you're talking about because namefags love to mention the species maybe once by description and then never mention the pokemon's species again for 50 chapters.

Seeing an author give names to pokemon is the clearest sign you're about to read a shitfic
>>
>>58891369
I remember reading manga summaries on serebii in my younger years and constantly needing to look up what the nicknames for the trainers’ Pokémon were, so while nicknames would 100% be a thing in a realistic Pokémon setting (we don’t call our pet dogs “dog”), the written medium doesnt do readers any favors. I already have too many characters for readers to keep track of and that’s without nicknames. Imagine every trainer character has potentially six more named characters the reader has to keep track of… It's not fair to readers.

And to continue, for a one-of opponent in a 6 on 6 match, are all of the opponent’s Pokémon nicknamed? If you use nicknames, they should all have nicknames. It’s Pandora’s box to me once you start using them.
>>
>>58891369
When I play, yeah. But for my fics it really depends on the characters. Most of my characters don't nickname their pokemon save for I think two in separate fics. One as the MC's super special extra cool ace, and the other being a nickname given for plot reasons.
>>
>>58891506 >>58891513 >>58891536
Point taken, I didn't think too much of it at first, but the reasons for not nicknaming pokemon make sense. The fact that I kept moving Sneasel's being given a name later and later into the story during my outlines probably has something to do with how bad of an idea it was.
Well it wasn't like I had any good name ideas either and there's probably something more elegant I san use to show that their relationship has progress significantly. Like an evolution? Maybe just a cute moment, idk I'll figure it out later. Anyways I changed Growey to Growlithe and removed the joke about Clair's bad sense of naming.

pokemon nicknames require you make your pokemon actual characters
this requires good writing, as its difficult to balance a multitude of different characters all with wildly different non-human mindsets, communication difficulties, and while still making them all interesting
you can crutch this by making pokemon intelligible to the reader, either through POV switching and/or through the main character learning to communicate with their pokemon better over time
this lessens the communication issue to a degree, but the other aspects are still there

in other words: not naming your pokemon characters displays either a lack of confidence in your writing ability, or you're playing games on purpose
this does not mean you should abandon references to your characters species, remind the readers on occasion while avoiding overuse
you should of course refer to other trainers pokemon by species more frequently, cause readers sure as shit can't be trusted to remember those outside of binge reading

in summary:
>skill issue
>>
>>58891618
These are good points. What fics are yours? I’d like to learn how to thread the needle as far as nickname-species name balance is concerned.
>>
>>58891235
That reminds me, there's that Dawn PLA, genderbender, SI story where Arceus makes her an Alpha Pokemon, alongside being a human, so she brainwashed everyone around her.
But if the Plasma Grunt SI!OC in this scenario has Salazzale genes and a Salazzle mom, then I think that lines up pretty well. Add into it Ghetsis being her father via poke-rape and you have an extra edge factor to better fit with the bingo.
>>
>>58891575
If you're giving nicknames, you better hammer the species name in and keep mentioning it. If at any point you find yourself calling a pokemon 'Princess' and the reader needs to go figure what that means, then you've already made your story worse for it.
>>
>>58891674

>Zoomzoom can’t hold a name and a species in his head for more than 10 seconds
Maybe AI summaries of stories are a little more your speed
>>58891513
Sure, but you wouldn’t be the first story to have a lot of named characters. Most of them will just fade out of the readers’ minds once they leave the plot anyway, there’s not a lot of mental load keeping up with the names of jobbers who show up for a chapter.
If you really don’t want to do that, you could say it’s convention to call Pokemon by their species while they’re battling for convenience, like how people get called by their jersey number in real sports.
Plus if there are ever two Pokemon of the same species then names make it easier on readers, not harder.

> It just feels wrong to give a character a full personality and call him Elf just cause you’re afraid people might forget he’s an elf
Yeah, except there are over a thousand different species named, not just “elf.” I will re-iterate, in a visual medium nicknames would not be an issue (Richie in the anime for example). But in the writing medium where there are more than 20 trainer characters, including nicknames for all Pokémon (which would realistically happen) is an impossible mountain to climb. A Song of Ice and Fire has over a thousand named characters and guess what? Active readers need to have fucking notes for that shit, not even mentioning references to historical characters. That’s the most successful fantasy series of the past few decades and he can’t thread that needle right. Believing a fanfic writer could do it is retarded and is proof you don’t actually write.

>You don't write
I write MD, where it feels extra weird not to give Pokemon names. Usually I just give a character’s species the first time they’re reintroduced in a chapter.
>You’re not Martin/Tolkien/whoever
Ain’t no tuition for having no ambition.

I promise I will read IMO soon, it sounds really up my alley, I’m just a lazy bastard.

>It sounds like he’s threaded the needle just fine
So uh… you didn’t read most of my post, which tracks with everything else you said.

To any current and future writers, take every bit of advice from this thread with a grain of salt. People like the anon above have half a brain and will zealously explain to you why your work sucks while having never written anything in the Pokémon fandom.

It is an issue, especially in pokemon fanfics.
>Western pokemon names: I looked up cool female greek gods and picked what sounded cool and only spared a passing moment to make sure they shared some traits with the pokemon in question!
>Eastern pokemon names: I called him blacky because his fur is black (´◡`)
It's pretty obvious which one is more intuitive when the author inevitably drops context clues later on. Also I'm tired of greek/roman mythology names. Please stop, for the love of god please get inspiration somewhere else. If I have to read about another trickster Loki I might begin ragnarok myself

You have a point, although reincarnating as a knock off Silver Eyes man as N sounds funnier, especially since Ghetsis is the genuine type of edgelord you'd think originates from fanfiction. Now that I think about it, despite Silver having the worse attitude, due to Gen 5s tone I might prefer that generation for an edgy protagonist.
It sort of reminds me how confusing I find BoC using a nuke as the isekaijin device, it's not the nuke itself I question. Just, why use a nuke? WMDs aren't esspicaly relevant to the plot so if you're going to give your Isekajin a backstory they can angst about, why nuke? It'd make way more sense for a Kalos story.

>>58891785
A couple of anons have mentioned it before, but a brainwashing villain does sound like a fun idea for an antag. Although I think Pofag is doing something similair since I've heard he has an Isekaijin villainess and a salazzle-blooded character does sound like she's fall into alot of the same 'isekaijin villain' tropes. Although Salzzzle is in Alolah, I hope you're taking notes Pofag.
>>
>>58892170
>Just, why use a nuke?
I figured it was because it made the MC a thermophobe which was relevant for his fire starter and a bit relevant for his conflicts with Team Magma. It also gave the MC experience with doomsday events which provides motivation to ensure he doesn't live through another, something a lot of isekaijins struggle with what with their "muh timeline preservation" bullshit.
That aside, why not use a nuke? Something has to isekai the isekaijin, doesn't really matter all that much what in most cases.
>>
>>58892294
A nuke just feels very impersonal, compared to something like a house fire. I get the thermophobia, but a nuke just seems silly to me compared to something more personal. Besides I don't think people need any reason in particular to want to prevent a doomsday, that's kind of the main strength and weakness of end of the world plots. You kind of just have to be alive to not want the world to end, it's very character neutral.
It's just a bit silly and hard for me to take seriously, being getting Isekaied is just a genre convention, unless the how AND why are plot important I don't really care.
>>
>aura
>psychic powers
>type energy
that's overused and boring, my MC somehow caught Pokérus as a kid and now has the best antibodies in the world
>>
>>58892306
I'm not seeing what you're seeing. A nuclear armageddon sounds a lot more relevant to ORAS' storyline than a housefire, and I don't get how fewer people dying makes for a better isekai method.
It beats getting truck'd or dying of a heart attack in your gamer chair at least. Those things never have anything to do with the isekai.
>>
>>58892314
Fewer people dying doesn't really matter to me. But at the same time a nuke comes across as a bit silly. But at the same time, I don't think a nuclear Armageddon is anymore relevant to ORAS than dying via a truck or heart attack. When I think of ORAS I think of natural disaster plots and retarded ecoterrorists, not WMDs.
Although it's not like it's a real problem, it still gives the MC thermophobia, I just think it's silly and don't get why a nuke specifically was chosen.
>>
>>58892306
That's the beauty of it. Different anon, but I don't give a fuck about isekai. Most of the stories I hear about in this thread just blend together for me. But I remember 'the one where the guy got nuked' because it stands out. I'm not going to read it, but some people are and standing out in the homogeneous slop of isekai is a good thing.

Every story needs crazy, stupid, and weird shit in it. Not all the time, but at least one moment that makes the audience question the logic behind it. Because those are the kinds of things that give your story a personality beyond just being another story. Like the Honey Bee Inn from Final Fantasy 7, Voldo from Soul Calibur, the alligator from All Dogs Go to Heaven. They stick out in the audience's memories and become a part of their identity because they are unique.

It's honestly the same logic of pokemon's 'make them a little imperfect' design philosophy. Most franchises have cool monsters because its not hard to make a cool monster, so purely cool monsters won't stand out as unique.
>>
>>58892322
>When I think of ORAS I think of natural disaster plots and retarded ecoterrorists, not WMDs.
This is the disconnect I guess. I can't imagine comparing the awakening of Primal Groudon and all that entails to a natural disaster like a wildfire or typhoon. This shit's biblical and it's all mankind's doing.
>>
>>58892306
>A nuke just feels very impersonal

Well my story is still a WiP and it wasn't going to come up for awhile anyways so I have time to think it over and come up with a good name if I go down that path. All I can come up with is Clair based names but Sneasel would reject those out of hand.

BoC has a brainwashing villain
frankly more interesting things come when you don't handwave grunts and followers as victims of magical brainwashing, but instead as traditional brainwashing victims
ie: cult tactics and strategies

afterall, Marshall Applewhite convinced 38+4 people, to kill themselves
Jim Jones? 918 people
how many could a charismatic enough leader convince on a quest to "save" the world?
>>
>>58892365
>I think it'd make way more sense for a Kalos story.
>Then use an ultimate weapon imitation, it's basically the same
Really? I hadn't thought of that.

>>58892574
Well the villain isn't meant to be a 'good' or even decently written one, it's literally an attempt to hit all the bingo squares as a character. While also making fun of some infamous fic that have been mentioned here in the past.

> Also I'm tired of greek/roman mythology names. Please stop, for the love of god please get inspiration somewhere else. If I have to read about another trickster Loki I might begin ragnarok myself
Easier said than done How far would you go looking up names based off of Egyptian/African myths without coming off as an Imperial Retard? You're better off naminging those after Pegans and Gouls.

Hilariously enough that whole faction is crossover reference between Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders and NFL team called the Raiders (whose colors are silver and black). All of the names but the Teddy Roosevelt guy are slightly changed versions of known Raiders players/staff.

It will also surprise you how many people in the Pokémon world have gray/silver eyes.

What’s a pokemon you want to use in your story but haven’t had the chance to?
>>
>>58887819 (me)
I updated the draft of the second chapter of my pokemon wip. There's some things I'd appreciate some feedback on. I'll spoiler them since I'd want (you), any other writer or reader really, to give me some feedback on this.
The first is that I'm planning on introducing Petrel, he has to be introduced in some form this chapter since he'll appear at the end of the next one. I was planning on writing the scene to be after the Blackthorns leave but before Rhys and Sneasel go to bed.
The problem is I'm not sure how to write Petrel in this scene, but I think Rhys needs to be wistful and full of wanderlust for the world outside the mansion. Maybe Petrel needs to be a bit annoyed, he'll be in a full body uniform so his identity will be hidden but I'm wondering how honest he should be about feeling trapped and not particularly liking the Mahogany family.

The second thing is Sneasel and Rhys' relationship. The final draft of the first chapter has Sneasel give Rhys her missing tooth he punched out. Rhys turns it into a necklace to represent their bond. In the second chapter she also speaks up (well chatters, she's like a bird/car) when Rhys dismisses himself as not having any friends, and Clair asserts herself as his best friend and rival.
I also thought of an interaction where she wouldn't want him to take off the necklace even when he goes to sleep. But I thought that was too romantic, I don't want their relationship to be *that* close.

Pictures of female Sneasel are hard to find.

I look at names suiting the character's ethnic background and research the historical significance or commonly understood meaning behind them. It is very time consuming, picking a good name that both means something and sounds good, but I believe it's worth it in the end.

Pofag here. It gets more serious as stakes get introduced and the plot becomes more forward. Team Skull is inherently kind of retarded so I have fun with that, but I like to think I keep the tone from being too comedic or too grim.
