Pokemon, as a series, works best when there’s no overarching storyline. I don’t know why GameFreak/Nintendo decided to make Pokemon more complex with adding stories to the game. The first three generations had it right. Gen 4 and Gen 5 really ruin the series.

The worse the source material is the more needs to be done to editorialize it to make it palatable (think about how much SW/SS had to be changed). Even then every game, even Red/Blue, has a shortlist of different locales and characters the player encounters which Kusaka has always based his chapters around since the very beginning. And it isn't as if he's totally bound by the games canon, Bianca's encounter with her dad at Nimbasa is infamously absent from the BW arc for instance.
