Serena: Man when I went back and rewatched it, the amount of wasted potential she had is astronomical. She’s not that interesting character-wise. She catches few Pokemon so her preforming got stale fast. It took almost half the entire amount of episodes to even have her be in a performance. Her rivals had potential but fall flat due to the rushed plot because it took them forever to even start it. And as an added kick in the teeth, when we see her, May and Dawn return, we learn the contests became the performances. So all of May’s and Dawn’s growth doing both preforming and battling goes up in smoke. May even tied Ash at the end of the Battle Frontier. She could have been great if they didn’t shove “Did you know Serena likes Ash?” moments in our faces every 5mins and actually made an interesting character.
