I assumed Colo and XD sold mid, but no, they both sold pretty well compared with other GameCube games. Colo sold about as much as Mystery Dungeon Red, or the first two Ranger games. Harder to tell VS Mystery Dungeon Time and Darkness as their sales figures are combined.Maybe it really is just because Colo was a bit too edgy for Pokémon (it's really not that edgy, but maybe in Nintendo's eyes it was) and XD got fucked over by association.

Look at the discussion around the studios which made the Orre games, Gamefreak basically got outshined by a studio which had no prior experience with Pokemon, worked with the limitations that were a thing at the time and created a more concise experience as opposed to the mainline titles. Notice how most of the staff behind the studio were either moved around to other projects or were put into the mobile lock until it got splintered apart.
