I've always thought that XY were shit on because of their lack of an enhanced version. If you think about everything the games introduced, while keeping a lot of the stuff from the 2D games, it's a shame they're shit on constantly.
Even worse, the region was rushed to make way for the worst Gen in the franchise. Those alola games were easily the lowest point of the entire franchise.

It's not like they cut it because they didn't want to include it, they cut it because they were saving it for an upper version, then said upper version didn't happen because SM's development was a nightmare. That's not how things normally used to go, although during that era cutting content from the base game to resell as DLC wasn't exactly unusual either. Regardless, the way it happened and the rationale used in internal documentation says it was about rushing the game out compared to either not wanting it at all or a hardware or legal limitation.

Reading about the development of this game really made me sad. What originally started out as a fascinating futuristic region turned into France tourism just because they got the foreign travel bug. If I were to put a clear demarcation line where GF lost their way, it would be here. Obviously there were questionable to bad design decisions in games that came before, but this is where they decided to just phone the franchise in and make everything a tourist destination. Shauna is hot, though.

The problem is they were too bare bones. One post game side quest, one dungeon, and one town. It took me 60 hours to 100% XY. Every other gen before it was 100+.
