Customizability and freedom
Nothing like it at that scale at the time. There were previous monster taming games, but being able to catch and use anything you see out of 150 minus one for most people, and being able to trade and battle with other people on a very portable system? Shit was absolutely wild back then, it was THE Gameboy game. Couple that with a very collectible card game with nice art, and a very decent anime adaptation, along with other types of merch, and you get something that just prints endless money worldwide.

>>58929707what about the japanese release dates
>>58929707>English>North AmericaIrrelevant, Pokemon was already a big success in 1996.
>>58929713>>58929714>posts an image of an English copy of Red/Blue>"No, I wanted info about the success in Japan!"Specify that then, you dipshit.Besides, everyone knows that if Pokemon hadn't gotten super popular in the West, it would have died after Gen 2.
>>58929746>everybody knowssource? that's a logical fallacy
>>58929746Bitch, please. If it wasn't a success in Japan it would never even reach USA.Success of it worldwide is just a consequence of it's success inside Japan. By the time gen1 was release at USA Gold and Silver was already done being release only 2 months later, idiot. And it was a other success there too. Gen 2 had zero influence by west market. If you wanna use that retard argument line, at least use it for the GBA games onward.
>>58929707Both original games and anime were made in Japan. February 1996 and April 1997.Japanese Blue, the base of Red and Blue was released at 1997 too. Yellow at September 1998, in-between USA releases.Gold and Silver were already in the making by that date.If you wanna talk exclusivity by western released then it was to brain marketing idea to rush up the release of first episodes of the anime, before the game, since ameritards kid wouldn't enjoy a game without guns and lightsabers without previous propaganda. At least not as much and in time of crazy Christmas sales
>>58929806do we know how much time has passed since february 1996 that they decided to make the anime?
>>58929558FPBP, it's the marketing. I couldn't tell you shit about the first season of the anime and you couldn't pay me to play RBY when FRLG exist, but I sure remember the fat fuck compressing all the pokemon in a trash compactor.

>>58929555west: some christians made a big hoohah about the game "promoting evolution" and it ended up advertising the gameeast: cockfighting is/was a popular sport and kaiju battlesboth: limited edition collecting fever
>>58929813Less than a year. And Gold and Silver was already in production.

Playground rumors, bragging rights.>"Woah you have a Dratini?!"It was a social game you had to be part of. Not unlike people collecting rare Baseball Cards.

>>58929872do we know the exact date
>>58929746>if Pokemon hadn't gotten super popular in the West, it would have died after Gen 2.Hardly. Japanese sales alone matched all the western sales historically. Probably, the franchise wouldn't not as "global" today, that's for sure, but that would be also a good thing. Maybe it would have ended up like Dragon Quest. Who knows.
>>58929558
>>58929920Dragon quest 5 had monster taming mechanics in 1992, 4 years before pokemon
>>58929558yes but also nohaving a fully fledged, functional "open-world" rpg about monsters fighting on a handled console that was 10 years old and drit cheap at the time is also the reasonthe concept and the accessibility were that good for it to succeed
I will say this flat out, to any fags that says other wise your false, the truth is whatever gen you grew up with your basis, like me I grew up with gen 2, I had gen one but I loss my gb and I played a shit ton of gbc gold, everyday after a horrible day at school I ride the bus home and play that shit, it was a comfort game and I sit back doing new runs, it really was the perfect time. Simple, Sure the physcial special splt added depth but it also loss a big thing of simplicity so many pokemon but not too much steel being fresh type was great and being able to headbutt trees and find secret mons was amazing, its why crystal clear exists lot of people love the simple tittles not mention you take your mons to pokemons stadium 2, (which I love to revist.) and kick all the wanna be trainers asses and unlock the countless secrets.
I was ten when it came out here in England. For those that weren't there you have no idea how extreme Pokémania was in schools. You couldn't even have a conversation without thinking or talking about Pokémon. I didn't even watch the anime at home but played the game a lot. Link cables, trading cards, annuals and the pogs and stuff. It was wild. Remember a lad at my school using his old game genie to be able to get mews and selling them for 50p to class mates via link cable.I don't even think it was overt marketing it just hit at the right time.Gameboy was over then by the way. Nobody cared about them at all and hadn't for years when Pokémon came out. Lads would be playing their N64 and even Dreamcasts if I remember right. Games were so much more advanced than anything possible on a Gameboy but the graphics didn't matter. The game was that fresh and that good, fully overwhelming. I remember a friend telling me he had a dream the link cable broke and a bulbasaur came out into real life, I was jealous of his dream. The marketing and hype for GS was way bigger. The Marill/Pikablu urban legends being spoken about among the lads then seeing Marill there and real as was going to be part of the game. Then getting it and battling had totally changed when we all thought we were billy big bollocks for spamming earthquakes.
>>58929558Maybe for burgers but Red and Green were already a massive success that far exceeded GF and Nintendo's expectations and the marketing kinda had to play catch up with that.

>>58929632>>58929650Even earlier - Wizardry IV was all about recruiting monsters. And if you want to go even earlier - DnD introduced summons in I believe first Greyhawk book in the 70s.Anyway, what Pokemon had that other games with similar games did not had was just being marketed to wider audience. All other similar games were exclusively things for geeks, nerds and otaku while Pokemon was marketes towards kids. For that audience it was a huge novelty. Compare Pokemon with other GB games and "toyetic" franchises that came before it. Fucking G.I. Joe and TMNT just looked sad in comparison.People try to eyeball when Pokemania actually ended, but in reality till early 00s west was importing various hobby anime in hopes of finding new Pokemon-like hit. Pokemon warped entire landscape of children entertainment for well over decade.
