Why did OLM just sorta stop making Pokémon movies?
Covid
>>58938556Essentially once they missed a year, the combo was over and they were no longer required to shit out an annual movie. idk if they had to miss a year due to covid, but annual Doraemon and Shin Chan movies never stopped. Also some difficulties behind the scenes regarding what would've been the next movie probably contributed to this.
>>58938685>>58938700I get covid causing a pause buy did it really kill all momentum to make movies going forward? Is there really no motivation to make more movies just because there was a pause?
>>58938700It's primarily because the movies are used as vehicles to promote mythicals. They have giant 8 month long promotion schedules that typically reveal an all new never before seen (other than by hackers) mythical Pokemon a couple months in, then host the first ever event for this mythical either as a wi-fi password giveaway for those that preorder a movie ticket or as a wireless event in the theater itself right before each screening of the movie. This stuff all sort of gets lost in the western releases where the mythical gets announced on pokemon.com with no mention of a movie and then the movie gets dumped on Netflix and treated as an extra long anime episode, but this is why the movies actually get made. Which is also why all the movies for each gen need to be planned before the gen actually releases so the mythicals and related shit is actually present in the game. And since Covid fucked over the gen 8 movies, Game Freak presumably decided to not do any gen 9 movies at all.
>>58938723So could they return for gen 10?
The real question is why they didn’t use Wit Studio again.
>>58939595Don't want to pay them I guess
>>58938556I imagine TPC saw that the OLM movies weren't really justifying their own existence anymore and quietly retired them in favor of starting talks with Hollywood studios. Maybe Nintendo will make it part of their recent movie initiative.
>>58940514Would Nintendo be able to enforce that since Pokémon has always been an autonomous thing? I mean I'm sure if they really wanted they could convince TPC but it would need to be something that TPC wants to do.
>>58940524Well as a joint venture between them, GameFreak, and Creatures, Nintendo does have some say in the decisions that are made. But the reason I brought Nintendo up is because they had a huge success with the Mario movie and seem to know what they're doing when it comes to this.Somewhat related, Pokemon is coming to Universal parks sometime in the future, and I'm pretty sure Nintendo used their experience with Mario and DK to make that happen.
>>58939589Yes, and I suspect they will.
>>58941175Think they'll continue with the alternative story Ash or have a new protagonist for the movie?
>>58938556Demon Slayer fucked them in the ass and they never recovered from the butt hurt
>>58942320I liked the AUniverse Ash and I want to see Risa and Margo again.
>>58942326This lol
they were never good and getting progressively shittier
>>58938723>It's primarily because the movies are used as vehicles to promote mythicalsexcept the last two to get a movie were create specifically for the movie
>>58942326Who the fuck is watching the Pokémon movies for the spectacle?
>>58942320I think the director said that Distant Blue Sky TV special was written as a farewell to the AU Ash.
>>58942637Well that's a rather open-ended farewell but I guess it works
>>58940514Surely the movies can't be that much more expensive than the anime, and we know that TPC sees the anime as worth continuing
>>58943402TPC was obviously unhappy with how the movies were doing because they completely stopped basing them on the current iteration of the show after XY. The fact that they stopped altogether after the relative failure of the jungle one tells me they really weren't worth continuing. Movies have much higher animation, actor, marketing, and distribution costs than the show, and it probably became too much of a risk for TPC as the audience was clearly losing interest.
>>58938556they became unprofitable
>>58938685>>58938700>>58938723Just the add food for thought, the last pokemon movie also didn't do so well in the box office.
>>58943905Didn't the movies always just do okay in the box office?
>>58943804Did they ever reveal how much it cost to make the movies?
>>58938556last one was Coco, right? it was THAT bad. Plus covid.
>>58938556Same reason pokemon doesn't get spinoff games anymore, they dont make enough to be worthwhile in TPCs eyes
>>58944758Was that the one with Zarude? Yeah I'm not surprised that one flopped because that was such a nothing Mythical
>>58945088I think Dada Zarude looks nice, and I liked the movie. It wasn't as good as the Zeraora one, but I'd bet it's better than all the Gen 5 & 6 ones, even though I never watched them.
>>58945603I don't know about the other movies but the Diancie one was mostly just Diancie dicking around with the gang and was boring as hell
>>58945603The Pokemon movies were consistently in the top five highest-grossing Japanese-made films in Japan until 2012 with the Kyurem movie. After that, revenues continued to slide. I Choose You temporarily broke that trend but neither The Power of Us nor the Mewtwo remake managed to maintain the same interest.
>>58946100The Mewtwo remake was baffling because it was obviously trying to take in nostalgia bucks but the art style change was repulsive and probably more expensive than just modernizing the animation. People who would want to watch the Mewtwo movie for nostalgia would just watch the original and there wasn't a hook for new people to be that interested in it.
>>58946610Yeah this was hideous what were they thinking
>>58946610I remember playing Pokemon Go around that time and Jessie and James showing up and looking awful because they based their models off that film.
>>58946919What the fuck, why did they do that?
