So i got a question, ive never really dabbled into competitive (aside from random battles on showdown) but a friend of mine has. He said that I am able to use any mon that I want, but he backtracked a couple days ago and told me that theres like 1 or 2 mons per team that u can have as a 'surprise pick'.The reason I havent dived deep is because I'm stubborn and want to use the pokes that i wanna use and not be a meta slave. Any anon's that can convince me of otherwise perchance?
>>58943968The best advice I can give is try out the meta first with the standard shit, get a feel for it for a while, learn matchups, THEN play with off-meta shit. I don’t get this thing where people want to jump in right away with no understanding and try to win with weak shit and lose. Get good first THEN play with your faves, otherwise you’d have to play with someone knowledgeable to guide you to win with your favorites. Which will be mostly them playing, not you. You can probably throw in one off-guy to start but educate yourself first before you commit to that.

>>58943968Depends on whether you want to win tournaments or play the ladder for fun. If you really want to reach the top then you'll have to make some harsh calls. That doesn't necessarily mean copying the current meta, but it does mean understanding it and choosing mons that you can feel confident are able to take on the strongest teams. Sometimes that can involve bizarre picks like how Pachirisu won Worlds, but those are usually the exception.If you want to just have fun, then do whatever. You won't get very far with all early route normal types or whatever, but if you know how to build a team then you can absolutely wreck the ladder.

You can give someone a premade good team and withing a dozens games they'll get a feel for how to use it even if their only experience with Pokemon is the single player campaign. After about a hundred games they'll have a good grasp of the fundamentals of competitive in general and at that point it's just a matter of learning EVERYTHING about EVERY Pokemon, item, ability, move, stats, and all their fiddly interactions. A year later, once they've played thousands of games only then does teambuilding even start to feel approachable.

AT BEST, how free would I be to build my team, because personally I'm highly doubting that I can build my own 6 mon team that is NOT meta and still compete. Its just that I think I enjoy the Idea of being off meta or larping as a trainer that uses his own fave mons (cringe I know). Teambuilding seems like the hardest skill to get right if u wanna play competitively but thats coming from an outsider so idk.

They also don’t have SV so I cannot turn my GoD Primeape into Annihilape.

Did VGC in 2013 B2W2 through to early 2017 with SM (skipped 2016 because I learnt I didn’t like Restricted formats), but I only started feeing confident making my own teams in 2015 once I felt like I learnt everything there was to learn l. Every attempt before that fell flat but the first time I made my own team and it did really well at a tourney was immensely satisfying
