I don't know if Palworld ever did it.Digimon always tried to be its own thing with its v-pet origins and if anything, took more inspiration from SMT. SMT, "edgy pokemon", only tried to be pokemon with Devil Children, which I doubt most pokefags really know. Same with Dragon Quest Monsters, which it also has a right to do so because like SMT, it did the mechanic first. Yokai Watch also always tried to be its own thing and not even Level-5 expected it to be as huge as it was during its peak. Monster Hunter Stories, same thing.

I can accept LGPE and Arceus being considered decent games, but the rest? Sword and Shield was ugly as sin, had terrible pacing, dynamaxing sucked ass, OST was very forgettable, even most of the new Pokemon themself were really subpar compared to other gens.SV was a little better but the open world felt very much empty, game still had a set order you were supposed to do challenges in instead of leaning more into the open world part, and it had terrible optimization problems, especially above water for whatever reason.ZA ended up being my biggest disappointment tinyass map you can almost fully explore in a few hours, shitty parkour challenges that serve no purpose because there's not even a jump in this game, despite the game taking place in 1 city they couldn't even be assed to give each district its own unique theme and architecture, and combat is just a spamfest with little thought needed. Dogshit game where every corner was cut, it would be laughed at if it wasn't Pokemon

As you said it very much started as a niche franchise that was only sort of popular in Japan, and it slowly managed to build up a fanbase oversea up to where we are today, with Monster Hunter being far from a Japan-only franchise and having worldwide appeal. It did not start as a "huge deal" in the slightest, and anyhow Monster Hunter Stories itself is just a spin off that barely had a budget, the third one they're releasing seems to have the most investment put in it so far. This is like comparing Pokken to Street Fighter (though I'm not shitting on Pokken, neat game)
