The dog isn't the worst.
Like, it's not good, but, it's not the worst. It's on the upper end of gen 5 onward starters at least.
The other two are shittier retrains of what were already shitty starters. This is particularly glaring for the gecko, as Sobble is already one of the most maligned starters of modern pokemon.
The bird is at least a memorable design. Not good, but memorable. That counts for something. I hate the bird, but I could draw it from memory already.
The gecko does not inspire object permanence. I forget it the moment I look away from it. The Water Curse remains strong.
Time will tell how their lines shake out, but their base designs are pretty bad and lackluster.

Eeeeh people were pretty cool to the gen 8 starters. People came around to Cinderace but the base starters were pretty low interest.
I think Pokemon in general has just lost some social traction, because regardless of sales, gen 9 broke a lot of people's spirit
