I'm not defending third versions either. I do like what they did with Gen 5 for a two-year timeskip but that's because in spite of some design choices Gen 5 did have one of the best stories in all of Pokémon.

DLC in Pokémon exists because instead of taking time and care into the games they've shoveled them out every year and it's not felt the same since
also maybe Masuda having full control over certain game aspects was a good thing

I far rather the method of paying for dlc for extra content, than the prior model of charging me for 90% of the previous game AND a guarantee I wouldn't use up to 5% of the "newly-added" content, as I wasn't a child or interested in pretending to be ash ketchum online.

DLC is really hit and miss with this franchise.
On one hand it's nice that I don't have to rebuy the same game and can just continue using the same save I had. It's also nice to see progression and development with the characters I came to know throughout the game. What I wouldn't pay to get more "chapters" of SV where we can hang out with Arven, Penny, Nemona, etc. Let me see Arven work on the damn badge quest.

On the other hand DLC in this way kind of limits the amount of changes that can be made to the game. Yeah shit can be rebalanced, but often new content is restricted to new areas and new characters, and progression from the old. In third versions the whole game can be reworked and rebalanced. Emerald turned a fuckton of trainer battles into double battles, moved all the Contests to Lilycove, and replaced the Contest Halls with Battle Tents previewing the Battle Frontier facilities. USUM completely rewrote the story, and now Lusamine isn't the main antagonist, but Necrozma is. You can't get that kind of shit from just a DLC.

I mean the whole point is also I was just disappointed with all the DLCs and new games in general. SwSh and SV are the only mainline games I haven't finished just because they aren't that good. I don't like the rivals, the settings are underwhelming, and then carrying that over to old regions (e.g.: the Unova DLC that isn't Unova in the slightest) just reeks of disappointment.

I did finish Legends: ARCEUS though. I liked that.

This is what I always thought about the Atlus re-releases. Yeah, they could just sell an expansion for $30 but they make a lot more changes in re-releases than just new content, P5R has remixes of the original boss fights and dungeons, baton pass is an inherent system mechanic instead of an addition from doing social links, etc

Better than third versions but I agree it still feels wrong.

After USUM completely butchered SM's story I'm glad DLC doesn't let them fuck with it anymore
