To me May has always embodied the peak childhood romance experience, either in the games or the anime. She's like your cute female neighbour who's friendly, peppy, approachable and has both girly and tomboyish aspects to her so she can share some of your boy hobbies without being excesively masculine, while at the same time having a feminine side that makes her cuter. I also think her original Ruby/Sapphire design is incredibly iconic. The red bandana, the spats, the shape of her hair that should look weird but is instead charming...
