Anons who picked Chikorita as your first Johto starter before 2009, how did it go?Tell us the story of your first Johto journey with that Chikorita.
>>59002445Chikorita was my main in Silver, back when I used to largely solo the game with one pokemon. Did Totodile in Crystal, then a bit later Cyndaquil in Gold.I'm fairly sure Chikorita was also the Johto starter I picked in Emerald after completing the regional dex.
The whole bit about Chikorita being the weakest starter and struggling against the gyms is a meme. The first two gyms, while they do have a type advantage, are so easy that it literally doesn't matter. Bayleef clowns on Whitney as well. Also, contrary to popular belief, Meganium has an advantage against Pryce, as all his Pokemon are weak to grass and outsped by Meganium.The only fight that gave me any real trouble as a kid was Lance, and iirc Meganium did help a lot in that fight by inflicting paralysis with Body Slam.Don't underestimate Meganium. It's damn strong for the campaign.

Until you can catch a few pokemon that's at a higher level that you can use only as backup when the starter faints. Then whatever legendaries you could grab early for the Elite Four. No reason to think twice that it was "playing wrong".

>>59002445I'm pretty sure I restarted after evolving to Bayleef after I lost to Quilava in Azalea town because I thought Quilava looked cooler. I must have restarted again at some point because I remember trading a level 86 Feraligatr to my friend for his 90+ Typhlosion. I don't remember much more except for a clutch Lanturn, Ampharos, and an Umbreon with Crunch that I would grind the E4 with over and over. I do distinctly remember teaching Bayleef Cut and thinking it looked cool af.Great times. GSC will always be peak pokemon to me, wish my old cartridges still worked.

It wasn't till HGSS where I figured out how you're supposed to actually use it. And for the record, Whitney is zero issue for Bayleef no matter what.
