Gen 1 and 2 laid the foundation, gen 3 expanded upon it, and then gen 4 was the ultimate version and a culmination of what came before with many old pokemon getting new evos and the legends going up to God itself. There's nothing to bring to the table past that point. Which is why gen 5 was just Kanto: American flavor
