Against New Horizons? It's much better. Even with limited dialogue pokemon feel less like props than the ACNH animals plus the terraforming is quicker and less restricted. I feel like my motivation has dipped a little now that I've gotten to the second area (Pewter city? Rocky zone).
Like I'm waiting on the guys in Fuchsia to finish building the Pokemon center and now I'm thrust into this whole thing learning about cooking and smelting and it feels a bit overwhelming all at once when I feel like I was still just sorting out Fuschia. Like the progression in complexity is kinda exhausting here and the extremely dense cave rocky terrain stuff makes it way harder to build aesthetically pleasing habitats.

As the other Anon said, you really should just wait until postgame to get going on proper houses. There's a shitload of customization options you've yet to unlock, and resources will be more plentiful as well. Don't worry, they won't run away on you even if they're living in the pokemon equivalent of favelas

Rain only affects the topmost block. Build a roof or elevated covering of some kind.
As for drying a small area, Onyx has a smooth rock in his cave but it's necessary for building his habitat.

I've done all the main quests and Tangrowth literally told me that I can go ahead, but the gate won't open.

"Cottage" and "House" are innately powered, but I'm assuming the den and hut aren't?
They don't get connected even with poles near them, and everything inside is unpowered.

So whats the play for restoring the half built houses in the first area? Demolish them then use a house blueprint to replace them? Or manually rebuild them? I still dont have the ability to craft most of the blocks needed for them, so I'm torn between just moving forward with the story to unlock the recipes or leveling them and using the blueprint

not that spoilery warning: do not have too many building projects going at once (enough to have more than 15 pokemon working on them at once)

spoilery details: when doing the third and fourth floor building projects on the sky islands i had a house and the pokemon center going too, but that caused the pokemon I had queued up for the floor building projects to keep disappearing before I could get them all there, i had to cancel the house to get the third floor built (it takes 10 pokemon) and then the pokemon center too to get started on the fourth floor (it takes 15 pokemon)

thankfully those floors only take an hour each to build so I can requeue the other builds once that fourth floor is done and they'll still get done at reset but i water like 20 honey to find this out

do i ever unlock the ability to make fire and electricity myself, like without needing a generator or a specific poke nearby? also, how do I stop the mud from appearing in the second region? i clear it up and it just comes back later.

i'm losing steam
i want to improve the environmental level but between housing efficiency, resource requirements, grouping pokemon under the same roof and aesthetics on top of it, it's just a lot to handle
also how the hell are we supposed to power the waterwheels in withered wastes' backyard village when we can't make water source blocks

Not complete/comprehensive but:

Frequent extreme natural disasters start happening (due to humans doing something stupid with science) so humanity decides to fuck off to space and put all the Pokémon they can into a virtual PC system where they'd stay asleep until things get better. A few humans would come back every so often to see if things got better and to do maintenance on the system even after everyone went to space. There was also a contingency plan built into the system to release Pokémon from it to whatever habitats it could find that it seemed like they could possibly survive in if the system didn't have maintenance performed on it for a while. This seems to be what happened, and it's working since Ditto is getting stuff fixed and making things more habitable for the Pokémon released from the system.

Haven't gotten the game yet, but why does it have timegated events? Is it really that similar to Animal Crossing in that they expect you to play it for months or years? I played the two DQB games but they were just one-and-done story games to me, not something to play for a ton of time.

No, but it's implied to have been a long time. The plan was for mankind to flee to space and wait out the storm, returning only when the biosphere had returned to being livable, which is something that could take hundreds if not thousands of years in reality. Likewise, the computer that all of the Pokemon were stored in had a failsafe installed where it would start releasing Pokemon on its own if nobody came to manually release them after a set amount of time; given the point of putting the Pokemon in the PC to begin with was to keep them alive while the rest of the planet was being ripped apart by the atmospheric phenomena, the release date would likely have been set to a point in the far, far future to avoid freeing the Pokemon prematurely and getting them all killed - likely to a point long after humans had estimated that they'd already be back on the planet by. So again, we're looking at hundreds if not thousands of years, realistically.

Plus the ending did show Ditto's trainer receiving the letter, showing that they haven't been gone for that long; but then again, Time dilation and the theory of relativity could play into the time gap.

So it's possible that human progress has reached to the point that it start to have negative effects on the planet, ultimately leading to both the climate and the biosphere to collapse. However, this leads to legendaries (who became dormant due to human activities) to reawaken and started to slowly restore the planet to its habitable form after the humans fully left. This also explained the Space evacuation plan; Space colonies were already established by then, but they're far away from earth's orbit (likely around Jupiter).

Someone spoiled the April mon is very fun, it will change your pokemon center appearance when it in charge.
