Today marks the 15 year anniversary of Pokemon Black and White releasing in North America. What are your memories of playing Gen 5 for the first time?

I got spoiled on all the Pokemon from the Japanese release. The game was fine but pretty underwhelming compared to gen 4 desu
>>
>they made an Ice Cream Pokemon?
>A chandelier pokemon?

I ended up putting them on my team
I played a japanese ROM before launch and didn't understand shit

I enjoyed pre-release season here, eagerly awaiting the dump of the Japanese rom, and then waiting for translators to do a hack job so people had a rough idea of what was actually going on.

>saw the cococoro pages about the new unova pokemon back in 2010 on a webcomic website
>remember getting hyped for the game, especially after hgss being so good
>bw finally releases in north america, think it's a good game, but not as good as hgss
>end up not getting b2w2 until a month after it releases due to this, oh man was i missing out
>love b2w2 to bits
Even now B2W2 are in my top 3. BW, probably in my top 10.
>>
>>59020266
Relic castle, route 10, and Lacunosa town are the only good memories I have about BW, the only games I didn't feel like playing again until now...

I pirated the JP rom as soon as the antipiracy was patched out. I couldn't read moonrunes so I had to guess and check my way through the game. In a weird way it felt a lot like my first playthrough of Gen 1 as a kid.
>Pokemon wants to learn a new move!
>What does it do?
>Oh well, only way to find out is learn it and use it in battle.
Status moves and buffs and and debuffs were a mystery (remember, there was no in game way to check your stats raises mid battle until Gen 7).

Also because I couldn't read what the NPCs said, I basically just had to walk around and talk to every NPC to find my way through the game. There was a huge sense of exploring the unknown that, again, I hadn't felt since Gen 1. I'm not sure I could enjoy a game like that again in the modern age. In college I had all the free time in the world to bumble my way through a game slowly; my free time is a lot more limited now. Still, it was a fun experience. Gen 5 is probably my favorite Gen overall.

Didn't play on release, didn't touch it until a few months before XY. Never kept up with news so didn't know anything besides the starters and the city based on NYC.
So when I finally played I didn't know the mons and didn't know what to expect. Everything was new and I even lost a battle. I fucking loved it. Like playing Pokémon for the first time again.

I'm playing it now for the first time, with the Volt White romhack, which makes it a very different game than vanilla, but I'm enjoying the underlying game much more than what I remember of Diamond. I'd dropped Pokemon after Gen 4 since I'd felt it had gotten too stagnant and the designs were getting worse. Gen 5 doesn't change too much, but I like the animated sprites and the seasons mechanic is interesting, I think it could be a staple along with day/night cycles. A lot of the Pokemon designs are ugly and unappealing, but there are plenty that I genuinely like so I can easily make a team using only new mons.

>BW
>Thought the visuals were cool, especially castelia and the animated sprites
>Liked seeing all these new pokemon
>Thought N being the final boss was cool
>Enjoyed fucking around with my action replay after beating it, changing seasons and probably using walk-through-walls since I liked exploring the mystery zone in Platinum
>In total didn't like it as much as the other games but had fun
>BW2
>Though it was nice I could get mareep early since ampharos was one of my favorite pokemon at the time (coincidental to the OP)
>Proceed to meet Alder for the first time and look around the little town that's there
>Just get fucking bored and drop the game there
>Only return to it before XY released just to finish it, probably did like half of the gyms before importing my level 100 BW team to get it done already
>However I did think Colress was cool
I maintain that BW is better than BW2 to this day

Played for the first time ever today, saved at nacrene since the faggot army is blocking pinwheel forest
Shitmon bonanza thus far, not too impressed

I also thought a lot of the new pokemon were really ugly

it’s so weird how they just randomly made a 2 stage water starter line and then never did it again
>>
Played it on an emulator around when gen 6 started. I liked the pokemon but the 3d2d graphics really bothered me. Plus the region and storyline did not grab me like KINNOH did.

I've never played gen 5. I do jack off to Hilda alot though if that counts.
>>
>ugly graphics
>gym leaders have 3 mons, no EVs and shitty movesets
>story is scared to actually elaborate something, munna kick summerize this
>cut features for a dead online flash game
>hallway
>good music
>N is a good character
>lots of cool designs
>great engine
>shit online/c-gear system
Huge downgrade from HGSS, still it introduced my favorite designs

Bewildered disappointment and exasperated disgust

I remember watching Let's Play of a guy who had gotten a Japanese copy of BW and I got spoiled before the game even came out. I forgot the channel's name but I named my Tepig after his Blitzen named Cole, which he let go and reunited with later on Victory Road.

i bought a used copy and didn't know i had to delete the old save file to make a new one. got all the way up to nacrene city and lost everything.
i caught everything i could and switched out my team constantly, which meant that by the time i got to the elite 4 almost everything was too underleveled to use. i did, however, have an overleveled seismitoad that i cherished dearly. i ended up trading some mons from a nearly-complete game on black 2 to beat the league, before trading that team back to black 2 to beat the league there.
good times.

>What are your memories of playing Gen 5 for the first time?
An odd sense of satisfaction, in a way that made it so I didn't feel the need to play Pokemon games again until Legends. I was genuinely happy with making them my last games until they shook up the formula.

Was my introduction to Pokemon. My cousin was playing at a sleepover and he explain the mechanics as best as he could to 8 year old me. I vividly remember finding the idea of Samurott learning a Bug move in X Scissor weird but cool.

many such cases
>>
it was almost cool but it made so many baffling fucking decisions that place it firmly in the midtier

I remember being on /vp/ and hordes of newfags all appearing because they had avoided any news relating to the games in 2010 (also /vp/ got posted a lot on FurAffinity or something around 2011 which brought in hordes of furries from what I remember seeing around that time). I posted a "spoiler" that N was in fact a Zoroark (Z = N rotated) and that it was impersonating Ghetsis' dead son the entire game, which some people believed and got pissed off over.

On the actual day, I dropped by EB Games to pick up both Black and White and the hardcover collector's guide and then went to the US for the day, played later that day but I remember feeling like this was some watered down runner up version released 6 months after the real version and all the actual hype the year before, a feeling I have never been able to shake when it comes to localizations released a significant time later.
