>grew up with gen 3 without gamecube
>always thought johto mons were super special due to how rare and unavailable they were in gen 3
>end up with a lifelong yearning for gen 2 mons even though most of them are garbage
Any GBAbies feel the same?
>>
>>59030982
that's how i felt until after I got heartgold
>>
>>59031000
this but soulsilver
>>
>>59030982
Between Emerald and Colosseum, Gen III treats Johto mons with more respect than GSC does.
>>
>>59030982
I was kinda the same. My first game was LeafGreen but I watched the some of the Kanto anime, and I always wondered where Togepi was in the game because I remembering Misty having one lol. My dad did buy me both Gold and Silver from a garage sale, but neither could hold a save. I didn't play through Johto until HeartGold came out and I pirated it on a flashcart
>>
>>59030982
For the longest time i actually thought skarmony, slugma line and chinchou line were gen 3 lol
>>
>>59031026
I really liked how Colosseum just let you catch all those rare/postgame gen 2 mons like Yanma or Hitmontop without much trouble. Almost none of the Johtomons were actually worth the original rarity they had in GSC.
>>
What a bunch of latefags in this trade ffs
>>
>>59030982
>always thought johto mons were super special due to how rare and unavailable they were in gen 3
Never thought about it like that but I do think Johto has one of the best Pokedex and gen 3 are my favorite games. I don't care if they're shitmons, I love how they look. I still think it's due to growing up during Pokemania and Johto Pokemon being the coolest thing ever before I abandoned Pokemon. Holding a Neo booster pack was my last Pokemon memory as a child. The shilling campaign for Johto Pokemon has never been replicated. There was so much hype, excitement, and promotion for the new Pokemon that it was unavoidable. You had the games, movies, cards, and endless merch. If they continued to do that with every new gen people wouldn't forget about Pokemon by the time the next gen comes out. New Pokemon has become a schedule and routine instead of a monumental event to look forward to. You have to wait for months to see new Pokemon in the anime, there are no movies, and the cards have to compete with staple shillmons. They don't even tease random new Pokemon before the games other than starter trailers or route 1 Pokemon in the second trailer. They're blinded by game sales and are losing the long term potential of new Pokemon.
>>
>>59030982
Having lived through Pokemania and played GSC on release, I also feel this way
>>
I feel similarly despite playing the everloving shit out of Gen 2. Maybe it's that a lot of those Pokemon were already somewhat rare to begin with, them being in weird places wasn't abnormal. While it's arguably better to put Pokemon in an actual video game, especially when there's a thousand of those fuckers running around now, the Gen 3-5 approach of putting them in weirdo side content has some charm to it. I guess the equivalent these days would be something like a Legends title, but there's something to be said for the GameCube titles, the Pokewalker, Dream Radar, and even Dream World (if they actually bothered supporting it for a reasonable amount of time, but given how the DS online got shut down because the company running it did the days were numbered anyway).
>>
>He didn't see Marill or Donphan in the 1st movie
>He didn't see Misty's Corsola or Team Rocket's Wobbufett
I didn't realize it was this bleak...
>>
>>59031196
Marill being there is actually sickening. This mfs whole claim to fame was being fucking Pikablu. I'd genuinely call it THE generation 2 Pokemon.
>>
>>59030982
>>always thought johto mons were super special due to how rare and unavailable they were in gen 3
They were also rare and unavailable in gen 2
>>
To this day, I still don't know how mfers went all of gen 2 without knowing about Skarmory. It's in the Stadium 2 intro ffs
>>
>>59030982
They could have fixed some of the distribution in HGSS by making Phanpy, Hondour, Skarmory, and Slugma available earlier in the game but they chose not to.
>>
>>59030982
Grew up with Gen 8.
Always thought past gens were nothing special.
>>
>>59031196
the anime has always been shit and I have never regretted my youth telling people I hated it and that I only played the games.
>>
>>59031687
I feel the same way about the One Piece anime and I only read the manga
>>
>>59031223
>>59031196
This, Pikablu hard carried Gen II up to G/S's release. I actually wonder if all the people thinking Skarmory and Slugma were Gen III Pokemon babies during G/S but were old enough to finally pick up a Pokemon game when R/S released. I guess I can see why the confusion was there if they never watched the anime.
>>
>>59031196
I saw the marill and thought it was a gen 1 pokemon lol
>>
>>59030982
Started with gen 4 and felt exactly the same.
>>
>>59031652
This. You'd have to have been pretty insulated from broader Pokemon media to not have seen most or all of these Pokemon somewhere during Gen 2. Either in Stadium 2, the anime, the tcg, the Pokedex books, whatever. I have a somewhat hard time believing so many people apparently lived through that period of Pokemon without being exposed to any Pokemon media other than the main games. Maybe if you were just casually into the games, but if you're still here talking about Pokemon nearly 30 years later? No shot. Some of that peripheral media was even more popular than the games themselves back then. I knew tons of kids at school who collected the cards and watched the anime, but didn't play the games. I don't think I knew any kids who were the other way around.
>>
>>59032067
OP's generation were literally babies or non-existent during Gen 1 and 2
>>
>>59030982
None of those Pokemon are very rare in Gen 3.
>>
>>59032538
Yep, this is a very ‘early zoomer whose first game was gen 3 or 4’ thing
>>
>>59031109
>They don't even tease random new Pokemon before the games other than starter trailers or route 1 Pokemon in the second trailer. They're blinded by game sales and are losing the long term potential of new Pokemon.
This is exactly part of the reason newer Pokemon don't see any success unless they're intended to be supremely merchandisable mascots for 3 years before getting dropped for the next set. But also a big problem is they've done so many things before that there's almost no room to market newer mons. Goobers like Slowpoke, Magikarp, Ditto and the Gengar line get all the attention in the world for being funny but we never see anything similar done with newer goober mons like Eiscue or Flamigo. They just have no real lasting appeal
>>
>>59031638
When were Gen 2 Pokemon as a whole not rare and unavailable? They're always the rare cameo whenever they appear, even in their own generation.
>>
>>59031055
I can agree with the Slugma line feeling like gen 3 mons, but Skarmory and the Chinchou line feels more like gen 2 than 3.
>>
>>59030982
the only one of these that i can really justify is slugma/magcargo and MAYBE skarmory
the rest of these are as gen 2 as they come
>>
>>59031055
I remembered slugma from playing gold but skarmory was new to me in 3rd gen. Not sure about chinchou, never really thought about but I think I knew it was an older one.
>>
>>59031055
I find weird Jasmine is a steel type specialist and didn't have Skarmory on her team. The iron bird does feel like a Hoenn mon.

This post describes me perfectly. Always had a fascination with Johto pokemon due to how rare they are in RSE. I would scroll thru Serebii and look at sprites of unobtainable Pokemon all the time.

I have managed to complete an almost full National Dex on real hardware, however I never got to play the GameCube games until just recently, I played thru both English and Japanese Colosseum emulated and finally got my dream Ageto Celebi :]
>>
>>59034594
>I would scroll thru Serebii and look at sprites of unobtainable Pokemon all the time
Are you me? I'd just sit there and wonder to myself what these Pokemon were, what GSC and Colosseum were since they were either out of stock or never sold in my area. Surely they must be amazing if you had to go through all these hoops just to get them, right?
>>
>>59030982
Aren't Slugma and Skarmory the only ones that commonly get confused as Gen 3 mon? I feel like that should be the criterion for this.
>>
>>59030982
Played Gens 1 and 2 before I played 3, but I agree with you. They were rare and out of the way in Gen 2, and borderline nonexistent throughout Gen 3.
>>
>>59034594
I wish I could trade and battle with you friend! Post secret base
>>
>>59030982
I thought a lot of gen 2 mons were gen 3 desu like skarmery and slugma
>>
>>59035124
I genuinely don't know why nobody has made a GB(A) to computer link cable, that seems like the kind of dipshit hobby project somebody would attempt. And before you say there's no audience the Digimon community has a little device that lets you connect the virtual pets to the computer and there's not only ways to connect them to the internet you can put them in a fucking fanmade MMO. Yeah the virtual pets are orders of magnitude less complex, but the Pokemon fanbase is way bigger and the games are entirely decompiled so really it's just the hardware limitation.

I made a thread about that like 10 days ago

Ah, desysnchs because of constant data feeds, that's the reason DS local wireless over netplay is such a bitch to get working too. And this is ignoring that even at it's best Gen 1 Pokemon was on the verge of desynching constantly because there's so much fucked shit that can happen. Not impossible but definitely a pain in the ass.
>>
>>59031223
>>59031700
Thirding this, Pikablu was the most famous playground rumour back then and even got hacked into some fake "early release" GS carts as the starter.

Yes that's my experience too, however I did own Gold as a kid as too, but still seeing their sprites in the gen 3 style felt so mystical to me. It is definitely worth the work playing each game and collecting them all! I've done it both the incredibly tedious was by playing thru LeafGreen 3 times to get each of the Beasts as well as playing Emerald an extra 2 times (I even bought a second copy back in the day to do it) so I can get the other 2 Johto Starters, as well as just recently playing and beating Colosseum to get the Johto Pokemon there!

>>59035124
Here's my Secret Base! I collect plushies irl so I might as well display them here too :]
This is my first time really engaging with it, I did this playthrough of Ruby with a friend online for the past year. We can't play together directly, so I have her send me her save file so I can stream and do trading and Record Mixing together emulated. I have over 200 hours on this file now!

>>59035994
>>59036009
Yeah on my physical Emerald file, the only Pokemon I'm missing are the Mythicals + Ho-Oh & Lugia as well as all the FireRed exclusives. However right now, I am playing each game chronologically, so I'm moving on to FRLG soon. BUT, I did also play through Emerald in Japanese so I have a game to connect to Japanese Colosseum, and I do plan to catch Faraway Island Mew in it soon >:]
>>
>>59036249
Ok I finally have someone I can confess rhis to.

I got the FRLG regional dex complete aside from the starters because I bumped into a guy with Leafgreen in 2023. In 2024 I got a Lunatone from a guy with Sapphire. I completed the Emerald regional dex tnag year too.

I’ve been trying to get Mirage Island on and off for 2 and a half years and luck has not been on my side despite the nominal 1 in 144 chance (completely ran out of box space in both games)

Also got Jirachi on my Ruby cart, it’s an OG 2000s save from some guy named Ryder!
>>
>>59030982
You can say the same with the trade exclusive Pokémon in Kanto. You couldn't actually catch them in the wild until Johto.

I thought he was incredibly special because of how impossible he was to get. Was really disappointed that he was literally worse than Linoone. Still adorable.
>>
>>59036502
That’s only true in Red and Green.

Farfetchd and Jynx are in Blue and Farfetchd and Lickitung are in Yellow.

Mr Mime is the only exception youd nerf trade backs to get a non nicknamed one
>>
>>59031055
I skipped GS when it originally came out so I legit thought half the johto dex were from hoenn because I never saw them being featured in promotional material for gen 2. That even included Espeon and Umbreon funnily enough
>>
I'm happy Azumarill got some time to shine in gen 9 by being an absolute tera raid destroyer.
>>
>>59030982
Blaine has a magcargo in gen2.
>>
>>59030982
Lol I'm a bort who played platinum and heart gold right afterwards, so hoenn mons all had that air of mystery to them. Though in my head, things were a little biased with things like Altaria being a Unova mon and Tropius being Sinnoh. I miss when there was so much of the franchise that elluded me...
>>
>>59030982
i played since since gen 1 but gen 3 made me yearn for the hard to get gen 2 mons since i only had ruby & leafgreen.
>>
>>59035557
>>59036233
Never owned a link cable because no one I knew had it and no store I knew sold it
I'm surprised to hear all the horror stories about how the link cable sucks considering it is the whole reason pokemon existed in the first place
What about the frlg wireless adapters?
>>
>>59032067
We call e'm hoenbabbies for a reason. They played all played RS first
>>
>>59032067
>I knew tons of kids at school who collected the cards and watched the anime, but didn't play the games.
I was one of those. Loads of cards, toys, books, and other various merch. Watched the anime every morning before school, didn't even know the games existed until a new kid moved into the neighborhood and was playing them.
