The real problem was the game had too many characters so it had to balance screen time between cardboard cutouts which lead to people bitching about the anemic writing despite the fact all Masuda games are like that. Only Xerneas has the ability to actually produce infinity energy, which is what the ultimate weapon and mega evolution rely on. Yveltal can only absorb said energy but isn't capable of making any on its own, making it have a much lesser role in the overarching lore of the franchise.
