Is getting rid of surprise rival battles with no opportunity to save or heal bad because it's depriving players of memorable moments of adversity, or good because the game isn't wasting your fucking time?

Blue's fights were all beginning of routes/areas (Lab/Route 22/Nugget Bridge/Lavender Tower/Route 22), after a heal spot (Silph Co), or advertised to you (Champion). Only one that wasn't was S.S. Anne but you could easily head there first
