It's amazing how much of a difference a VA makes. I watched Pokemon in English as a kid because I lived in America but now I'm rewatching it in Japanese because I live in Japan and some of the characters I didn't care so much about as a kid are my favorites now because the VA's did such a great job. Jessie/Musashi is literally one of the best characters in the entire show, it's a shame that her VA is known in the West for Evangelion and not Pokemon because her performance in Pokemon is so good! I never really liked Meowth/Nyaas as a kid either but again the Japanese VA did such a good job that I really like the character now. I did like Psyduck/Kodakku as a kid but I somehow like it more now.
Also the dubbing company changed a ton of stuff. There's even entire scenes that I don't remember from the English version, and so far I've watched a few episodes that never got English releases at all. I'm 40 episodes in and I don't remember seeing the Dratini episode, Tentacool episode, or the beach beauty contest episodes when I was a kid.
>>
>>59048865
>Dratini episode,
Was banned because of the warden pointing a gun at kids. Team Rocket having guns and robbing people in the early episodes was fine because they were robbing adults.
>Tentacool episode,
Was removed from airing after 9/11 happened, before that it was fine.
>or the beach beauty contest episodes when I was a kid.
It was skipped because of James's fake tits. The episode was later aired, though with that scene removed. It was even advertised as a "lost" episode along with the one where Santa had a harem of Jynx.

Dubs are for subhumans, news at 11.
>>

Yes
>>59049133
Also yes
>>
I can never watch Pokemon subbed because can't take the Japanese opening seriously
>Tentacool episode
I still remember seeing it. I'm not sure if I watched it earlier or if I watched it when Boomerang started rerunning pokemon in the late 00's early 10's. It got banned after 9/11 so I could've watched it when I was living abroad outside the US
>>
>>59049778
>I can never watch Pokemon subbed because can't take the Japanese opening seriously
What? It's much better than the burger one.
>>
>>59049778
I think that's around the time I was watching it. I remember seeing the clip in the opening where it destroys the building but never saw the episode itself.
>>
>>59049224
Granny Goku sounds like shit and none of you wapanese will ever convince me otherwise.
>>
I really don't know how someone can watch Pokemon subbed and not feel utterly soulless when they hear "Kodakku kodakku!" instead of the actual English names they're familiar with.
I'll watch subs for anything else, but pokemon's gotta be dubbed. The dub ain't great, but the sub's just plain wrong. Unless you were born Japanese there's just no watching it.
>>
>>59049968
is there no fan-edit of the anime that is just the japanese version with the dub's names?
>>
>>59048865
4Kids dub is funny and soulful.
>>
someone needs to redub the entire anime with the OG voices through AI
>>
>>59049968
Most people aren't as monstrously autistic as you, thankfully.

But this is why localization was a mistake and all the Pokemon should've just kept their Japanese names.
>>
>>59050017
Not only does that sound like the most autistic thing imaginable, the supposed target audience for that shit would just cry about hearing the voice actors audibly say Fushigidane even if you replaced Hayashibara saying "dane dane" with a voice clip of some random nobody saying "bulba bulba" as replacement dub music suddenly kicked in for one and a half second.
>>
>>59049836
>What? It's much better than the burger one.
I completely disagree, and I usually prefer the Japanese openings of most anime that got dubbed from this era. Like there's no reason to prefer the English Digimon opening over Butterfly besides pure nostalgia. Though it fits the more ominous tone of Tamers
The English/international opening for Pokemon just knows how to successfully pump you up, it just hits so much emotions. Yes it's cheesy too but in a good way. Though the Japanese version isn't bad either
>>
>>59048865
I watched both. I am not even American.

The dub is better.
The sub is boring.
>>
>>59048865
Pokemon subbed is like unironically a baby anime. Pokemon dubbed is actually a grown up tongou in cheek comedy rule of cool adventure. The English I tros actually tried to make Pokemon seem cool... the Jap intros never went for that. English dubbed Pokemon is closer to something like YuGiOh, Subbed Pokemon is closer in tone to something like Sazae-san. Even the director of the show Shudo thought the dub was superior for his tone meanwhile the Jap ver had too much suits meddling to sanitize and make it another baby anime.
>>
>>59050224
Your buzzword salad isn't convincing enough. And your argument is terrible.
>>
>>59049968
I'm not watching it subbed or dubbed, I'm watching it in Japanese. I thought that was clear.
>>
>>59050224
>Even the director of the show Shudo thought the dub was superior for his tone
Gonna need sauce for this, because it would be ironic since other people on the show mentioned the anime was supposed to have a 50's showa Japan flavor to it
>>
>>59050268
The dub of the third movie was closer to his script, in the Japanese be was forced to change it. That's it.
>>
>>59050256
It is a fact that the Pokemon anime was targeting different demographics in between Japan and West. 4Kids went hard on the cool factor which appealed to teenagers, meanwhile Japanese Pokemon was for little kids only. They tried branching out with XY but that didn't go so well there and lost to Yokai Watch, so they never attempted it again.
>>
>>59048865
The dub is better to me bc I play the games in English. Maybe if I played them in Japanese the original version would appeal more to me.
>>
>>59050268
It's obviously not true. Dubshitters go "no but ackshually the director/writer/mangaka/emperor liked the dub better" all the fucking time even though the person they're trying to refer to never watched the fucking thing.
>>
>>59050276
how would he know? shudo didn't know english at all. also,
>no source
>>
>>59050312
>I play the games in English
Why wou you do that to yourself?
>>
>>59050276
The particular thing he complained about with movie 3 was the director including a scene where the mom returned at the very end, and the dub sure as fuck did not cut that scene.
>>
>>59048865
do you speak japanese
>>
>>59048865
>Evangelion
I met Asuka's voice actor (JA) because she did Casca in Berserk and I got volume 1 original manga signed by her
>>
>>59050261
I'm not that anon but that wasn't actually clear and even if you were watching it subbed the audio would still be in Japanese you fucking idiot.
>>
>>59050612
Yes. How would I live in Japan if I didn't speak Japanese? Next to nobody here knows English.
>>
>>59050725
>even if you were watching it subbed the audio would still be in Japanese you fucking idiot
How would someone be able to judge the performance of a voice actor of they can't understand the language that's being spoken?
>>
OG Team Rocket are funny in both the dub and sub and I think all their voice actors are good.
>>
>>59050787
That's a pretty common argument/talking point in /a/ or other anime discussion circles and there's not a clear answer because people get pretty angry about it. Some people say the emotion/talent of the VA is still obvious even if you can't understand the language while some people use the argument you just did.

I mean if you want my opinion, it's somewhere in between, where obvious extreme displays of emotion are universal, but you're missing a lot of nuance in terms of delivery etc. if you have no knowledge of Japanese at all and are relying entirely on the subtitles.

But using subs at all doesn't = "literally no Japanese knowledge" which is why I said your post wasn't initially clear on that. Like I know some Japanese as well (not fluent but also not a beginner) and am capable of understanding a decent amount of anime dialogue when the audio quality's good, but with some older anime series the combo of janky old audio and sometimes overpoweringly loud music makes it so that subtitles are helpful in combo with it. For some people it's not just staring at the subs and not taking in the Japanese audio, but using the subs as an accompaniment to stuff that might be unclear in the audio alone. The anon assuming you were was watching subbed most likely wasn't an implication you didn't know Japanese but just a sort of reasonable assumption since Pokemon subs are pretty easy to find. Also sometimes in anime spaces people just use subbed as a shorthand for "in Japanese" since what they're really saying is "not dubbed"

But mostly I thought "I'm watching in Japanese, not subbed" just sounded kind of dumb because the subbed episodes are still in Japanese.

WAKUWAKU!!!!
>>59049968
sounding white again, sticking with what's familiar and not venturing out. Satoshi sounds way more soulful in Japanese....

>>59050204
Everything sounds like shit in English, pro voice actors are doing it in Japppense.

>>59050224
Atem sounds better in English, that's the only one I will give you.

>>59050312
sounding white and 12.

>>59050612
Passed the N2 dickhead.
>>
>>59050813
I didn't like Meowth in the English version and Jessie sounded like a bitch. I liked some stories involving her but she wasn't anywhere near my favorite character.
>>59050823
I thought it was clear because I mentioned that I'm watching it in Japanese because I live in Japan. I thought that detail made it clear.

When I was 19 I used to work part time at this place owned by a Korean woman. Sometimes her sister or her mom would come in and they'd talk with each other in Korean and I genuinely couldn't tell when they were talking calmly or arguing. I thought they were arguing all the time and I asked about it one day and my boss said that's just how Korean sounds. I don't know any Korean, I couldn't imagine watching a show in the language and then trying to make claims about the performance of the actors just because I followed along with subtitles.
>the subbed episodes are still in Japanese
But you're following the subtitles, not the dialogue. That's the important part.
>Like I know some Japanese as well (not fluent but also not a beginner)
Keep it up, you'll get there.
>old audio
I've watched some stuff from the early 80s and I haven't had a problem with anything except for when I tried to watch Dragon Ball but That's because they threw out the masters. If we count non-anime stuff than I've had no problems watching Godzilla and stuff, including the original. Maybe you just found poor quality rips?
>>
>>59050963
>Jessie sounded like a bitch
do you have trouble understanding Jessie's character
>>
>>59050963
>Keep it up, you'll get there.
Thanks!
>Maybe you just found poor quality rips?
Yeah I think that's mostly it. Like the audio mixing/quality is off maybe, and so the dialogue blends in too much with the rest of the soundtrack and makes certain lines hard to make out.

I feel a little more comfortable reading manga in Japanese by comparison because at least printed text is much more straightforward.
>>
>>59051004
Do you have trouble understanding that she's not supposed to be revolting?
>>
>>59051014
Reading is a lot easier for me too but part of that is because I have ADHD and will often get distracted by my own thoughts while watching TV.
>>
>>59050826
>Everything sounds like shit in English, pro voice actors are doing it in Japppense.
Pro voice actors also did the 4Kids dub, whereas Tpci hired literal whos off the street with no experience to replace them starting with Battle Frontier arc. That’s why the English dub has been unwatchably bad for the past 20 years.
>>
>>59050963
nta but really old stuff can sound very mumbly. But we're talking about really old stuff here, not something as recent as Dragon Ball.
>>

They put that one on a VHS tape I had as a kid. Shit was nice. Wish I could've seen the Dratini or beach episode.
>>
>>59051091

Than why are they so bad at acting?
>>

Dragon Ball is from 40 years ago

Actually, I am Japanese.

I've been wondering what's the best way to watch the Pokemon anime in Japanese.
>>
>>59051091
>Takeshi/Brock
>Yuji Ueda
Blanka, Jin, Strider, Watchdogman, Lord Raptor
HoroHoro, Keitaro, Lutz, coloredman.exe,Shiro Iori

>Misty/Kazumi
>Mayumi Iizuka
Tron Bonne,Eucliwood Hellscythe,Sora

>Ash/Satoshi
>Rica Matsumoto
Bakura,Haro,Nall,Jim Hawking.Gon,Musashi,Opera

>OAK
>Unshō Ishizuka
Kizaru,Koshiro, Scias, Jet,Void, Ginzo,Baran,Guile, Zabuza, Mr. Satan, Hoenheim, old Joseph Joestar, Heihachi

That's not everyone, but holyshit dude, the english voice actors are fucking scrubs in comparison
>>
>>59048865
I watched it in spanish (spain) as a kid and I still love James' and Meowth's VAs, bit of a shame the rest of the cast is subpar
Japanese is soulful yeah
>>
>>59051159
Starting with the first episode and continuing in broadcast order. What even is your question?
>>
>>59051203
Probably a retarded gen alpha unable to pirate stuff

To be fair, the three first gens don't have very good subs.
>>
>>59051324
Putting it lightly.
the SOSsubs are absolute shit; you are better off watching the dub for those as its closer to the original.
>>
>>59051324
He asked about watching it in Japanese, not watching it with English subs
>>

>the actual English names
The Japanese names are their *actual* names though. English names are literally fanfic. You don't understand what soul is.

black gamers and black weebs or are gamers in the same category as black weebs
>>

Watching it in Japanese with English subs is still watching it in Japanese
