Were Pokemon contests a flop? Weren't the an attempt to generate interest within the female market? I can't imagine any girls caring about Pokemon contests.
>>59060569They were too obtuse and overly complicated for literally anyone to care
Pokemon Contests as they're depicted in the anime would be appealing to girls. But as they are in the games, they're a half-baked, obtuse, and boring side mode
I think they were pretty successful, they tried them all the way until gen6. The gen5 version was just bad
>>59060569The RS implementation was fun, I fucking loved them. But the pokeblock system really sucked.
>>59060587I always felt like having a spin-off based around contests could be an interesting opportunity to flesh them out more. I always felt like they were supposed to be a sort of counterpart/alternative to battles, but they weren't even mandatory in the games they were in.
>Treating Pokémon Contests as a girls thing.DPP had contests at their most girly. Other than that it's mostly neutral. It's just that the female characters who did it in got most of the focus in the anime. Also in the anime, Pokémon Showcases are for females only, they're different from Pokémon Contests but seem to be used for the same narrative purpose as them in the anime.
>>59060764The anime made May contest-driven solely to appeal to females.
>>59060569>female avatarYWNBAW
I think the big reason Contests failed was because of the disconnect between the anime and the games. The anime added a lot of ideas that were either much cooler looking than they were in the game or not possible in the game, most notable of all being the idea that you could go an adventure just to do Contests with a grand ultimate Contest at the end. And even if somebody did want to do Contests accepting how stripped down they were compared to the anime, they'd still have to go through something like 1/3 of the game just to begin to interact with the systems.PS Dawn sexo.
>>59060993Yes but her rival was a boy
>>59061000He probably just wants to cuddle Dawn
>>59061442An effeminate boy
>>59060569>lasted 2 generationsIf it was then all gimmicks like Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Dynamaxing, and Terastillization are flops.
I really doubt contests will ever return to the main games. It's too bad, they're an interesting idea with lots of potential.
>>59060569>Developer has a cool idea for a minigame and implements it as a feature to enhance the player’s experience >could it have been …MARKETING???????the brains of anyone who grew up with nu-Pokemon instead of the classic gens are just operating on a different framework entirely
contests were proof gamefreak had no idea how to design a game and simply got lucky with pokemonsome random anon on here could design contests competently in less than a week and it could be implemented into every future installment trivially but gamefreak could never do so with years of development and effort.
>>59062532It's actually bizarre seeing how much you poketards dig your heels to defend game freak. Lol you sad little idiot.
>>59060569Contests are a distraction activity. As a distraction activity, they are pretty good. The mechanics weave into the real game mechanics in interesting ways, there's a degree of time investment and preparing to it, and elements of mastery. But, never forget, this is a distraction activity. This is decorating your secret base, this is building your shitty lego house in Zelda, this is the shitty mini games in the DS era Mario games, these only really have value to children getting one game every few months, so some ways to break up what you're doing in the game become valuable. If this was sold alone on Steam, the contests would be a 99 cent proof of concept/tech demo someone made while learning a new system or programming something else for their game, not a full release. If anything can be said to be the flaw with Contests, it is that there was enough emphasis on them to convince anyone otherwise, especially the anime.
>>59062556I despise game freak, not sure how you got that from my post
>>59060569Cute naked DawnI personally love contests. theyre a nice distraction from the main gameplay and story, and also just gives more life into the world. Not only do you get to use Pokemon in a different way from the standard battle, but characters you wouldnt expect show up to participate too like Jasmine.I hope they bring them back one day, or just another kind of side game...
>>59061437>most notable of all being the idea that you could go an adventure just to do Contests with a grand ultimate Contest at the end. That's kind of how it was in RS, you were supposed to work your way up to Lilycove's Master Rank hall, but then they decided all contests (and other side ventures like Pokeathlon) should be held in a single location. But even in RS it was flawed because without the proper berries trying to win contests as you go would just result in you fucking up your Pokemon's sheen with weak pokeblocks. And unlike gyms, using a new Pokemon meant starting the whole process all over again.
>>59060569Contests were a waste of dev time
>>59062550I disagree. contests being in the game at all is proof gamefreak has no idea how to design games. it’s pure bloat.
>>59060569Contests came out during a time where the limited graphics actually hindered its appeal. They should have waited until the 3D generation, provide multiple mini-games other than contest move judging, and have an end goal like an Elite 4 for contests. Also they need to provide plenty of resources and QoL features to make it so that players don't have to waste too much of their time creating or changing back a contest ready pokemon from their in game team. Most girls aren't going to waste their time to what amounts to a convoluted distraction.
>>59061000No shit. If I'm going to be staring at an ass all game, it might as well be a girl's ass.
>>59062568>If anything can be said to be the flaw with Contests, it is that there was enough emphasis on them to convince anyone otherwiseKind of, yeah. Despite the obvious potential of the concept, it's never presented on equal footing with the other major goal a player has, which is being the strongest trainer as always. It's just a feature, not *the* goal. But I think as far as features go, it still accomplishes a number of great things. It's a massive addition to worldbuilding; from gen 1 we already had the Pokemon Fan Club full of NPCs who just enjoy Pokemon without necessarily being into battling, but here we have an actual activity the player can participate in that presents another way of interacting with your Pokemon than just training them to be stronger (namely, grooming them and taking them to the Pokemon equivalent of a dog show and agility competition), and plenty of interlocking game systems to go along with it. The breadth of what it means to become a true Pokemon Master is greatly expanded in Ruby/Sapphire: it's not enough to know all there is about battling, you now also have contest effects of moves to learn about, there's goddamn fictional botany in learning about berries and their flavors and how they correspond to contest stats on top of other effects they have, growing them, making pokeblocks out of them (and doing it well), etc. Again, there's not quite as much to it as the main meat of the game which is battling and adventuring around the region, but it arguably does more for the setting and immersion than purely the gameplay.
It could never work in a main line game.Contests always just being some cheap low-budget side mode is what killed any potential it might've had.Girls want something they can autistically sink tens of hours into but it has to actually look the part. Have it be flashy and glamorous. This, this isn't it
You could maybe try to make contests work now that the games are in 3D. But the way the abime portrayed them it would basically be a physics simulator where you can sequence and time moves to cause different particle effects. To get that functional would be ridiculously hard for a dedicated project. As a secondary objective within a game that will sell without it anyway? Forget it.
>>59060672This. Pokémon Contests have a lot of potential. But I don't think that can fully be explored if it's just limited to a side mode in the main games. In a full game focussed on Pokémon Contests:The main focus would be a Pokémon Journey across a Region earning Ribbons for our Pokémon.Different Pokémon having different Base Stats specficially for Pokémon Contests so that all species aren't identical besides their movepool and if they can Mega Evolve or not.Pokémon Contests made more in-depth to at least the same degree that Pokémon Battles already are.Likely much more expanded care mechanics for our Pokémon along with possibly even dressing them up with Accessories.Ranked online multiplayer for Pokémon Contests which also mean a metagame for Pokémon Contests.A story that doesn't involve saving the world and an evil team.>>59060589Gen 3 gave us Pokémon Contests and then gen 4 had an alternate version of them. But after that they only returned in ORAS for being a remake of RS and BDSP for being a remake of DP. The Pokémon Musicals in gen 5 aren't Pokémon Contests, but I agree they're so bad, they're such little to them although I admit they did make the dress up better than in DP. Then in the anime, contests function differently but that's because it's a different medium, also Pokémon Showcases are confused for contests. Pokémon Contests as a whole really seem to have an identity issue. For me, I consider the RSE and ORAS contests to be the truest version of Pokémon Contests and thus what I'd like expanded on.
>>59064443>The Pokémon Musicals in gen 5 aren't Pokémon Contests, but I agree they're so bad, they're such little to them although I admit they did make the dress up better than in DP.The Musicals could have 100% been salvaged, if a pokemon could keep the outfit it used in the musical for real battles.
>>59060569>Weren't the an attempt to generate interest within the female market?I thought they were more an attempt to make a Pokemon useful for something even if it wasn't good for battles
>>59065387ThisAppealing to females was a nice secondary bonus, but the real reason was to have something to point to and say "see, this isn't JUST cockfighting"
>>59060569
>>59065376They have the attachment points, they turn around during the musicals to show off the backsprites being the same size as the front sprites (although part of me wants to say some/all of the items didn't show up when they are turned around I haven't willingly played a Musical since B2W2 required it for medals), there's like 4 Pokemon on stage so the memory requirements aren't a fucking problem outside of maybe multiplayer or triples/rotations so I guess maybe that's the sticking point.
>>59064410>You could maybe try to make contests work now that the games are in 3Dnot with how lazy Gamefreak is with animations lmao
I loved contests in gen 3 and 4, boys and grown men whinged to fuck about them and cried "USELESS FEATURE" and then gen 5 was so fucking bad with Musicals they just decided to throw it all out and then barely remake them again in ORAS and BDSP.Gamefreak sloppification is partially because of retards actively encouraging the developers to skimp on content that appeals to women lol. The sad part is GF still tried with things like Trainer PR video in XY and the photo studio in SM/USUM. Then they gave up with gen 8 and 9 and just gave some half-assed selfie camera.>>59060580>>59060587Case in point.>>59062527The sad part is, Pokémon Unite basically took the idea of putting outfits on Pokémon outside of "event mons" like the hat Pikachus and cosplay Pikachu, and then monetized it into skins for a crappy Tencent game.Build-a-bear also keeps release pokémon plushies, but Build-a-bear doesn't really try to make clothes for specific pokémon body types specifically, treating them more like collector scalp fuel plushes. The other issue is that pokémon designs seem to already be fine with "fur clothes" (designs like Raboot's weird parka collar, or Meowscarada's mask), with Pokopia trying to normalize the weirdness of pokémon having flesh-clothing, all of which is to try to "dress up" pokémon without actually dressing them up...
>>59065423>>59066128If there's pics there must be a video. POST IT.
>>59062279They are.
>>59066407They're in the unreleased epstein files
I'd be nice and interesting if someone made a contest romhack, a contest fangame or a Showdown-like simulator for contests. Also there doesn't really seem to be any place online dedicated to talking about contests, the idea of contests having their own community would be nice, like how some other aspects of the franchise already have a community with some of those having places dedicated to talking about them.
>>59060569they were a complete waste of resources and they realized the lack of actual opponents was an issue way too late.
