Gen 2 is a perfect followup in part because it knew its place, the new pokemon didnt take the spotlight away from the beloved originals and largely existed to fill out the world instead of always being front and center. They really want to show off the new pokemon in each new gen but the designs are almost always markedly worse than what they came up with in 1996. I've always felt they should add like maybe 50 new pokemon every generation and prioritize quality over quantity. There's just way too fucking many of them now and I'd only choose a handful of them over the pickings from gen 1.Pokopia being largely familar gen 1 classics while drip-feeding the player newer pokemon is how the main series should have always handled it. The massive successes of both Pokopia and GO prove this beyond any shadow of a doubt.
My cutoff was Ruby & Saphire because I didn't own a DS when I was a kid. I played the Switch remake of Diamond & Pearl. It's fine, but I would have been more disappointed if I played the original DS version, because it's such a minimal upgrade from what I played in R&S.
