What would you want out of WW's rival/s (assuming it has one), is there something no rival (or only one or two) in the series has done that you'd want to see them do?

Don't really care about personality (mean vs. friendly) as long as it's interesting and they have a good team.
But I'd like another set where the main rival picks the 'mon strong against yours, and the "lesser" rival picks the 'mon weak to yours.

I want the rival to be competent.
I'm tired of feeling like I'm bullying retarded children everytime I have to battle them.
Nemona was alright in this respect tbf. Team coulda been a bit stronger though

The starter thing has never mattered to me since it's just a tutorial to teach the player the concept of type match-ups. The idea people seem to have is it's them going "haha get rekt'd loser", and like... who cares? It'd be more interesting if they choose one and then gave an actual in-universe explanation for their choice.

And it's weird how people don't seem to notice the whole "rival choosing the one weak to our starter" started right around the time starters having elemental moves at level 5 started being a thing.... which yeah, I would be mad to lose the tutorial battle because my water pokemon only knew bubble and theirs knew leafage.

Have them start off friendly but get so bitter over their repeated losses to you they join the evil team

I just like seeing all the starters being equally represented.
And the tutorial battle could easily be against the lesser rival, and leave the main rival for later.

If people want more like black and white where you have two pals or whatever so the other two starters are plot relevant, sure, but z-a literally did that and people still complained. Taunie/urbain used both of the other starters in battle against you including the one that has the type advantage.

Like the only time the rival/starter actually worked in the way people imagined it is in yellow. Not red/blue/green, but yellow has the rival taking the starter meant for out of spite. Which if it wasn't for the pikachu oak caught 5 minutes would have left you with no starter and blue heading off with you back in the cuck chair.

Which works in universe because that dudes grandfather literally went "sorry my blood related grandson, you can wait till later while I give my 1 pokemon to this other kid" and yeah... fuck oak.

I would really like to see a rival whose team adjusts after every battle, they have dexes with 300-400 Pokemon on average now so why not make the most of it. This is kinda like the Yellow ver. Rival but for every battle. This would also mean that prior to whatever the final battle is that the rival battles would be entirely optional which I think would at least give more players more of a sense of this character being an actual rival where either they're overconfident when battling you because you repeatedly lose to them, there is a more realistic sense of rivalry where there's back and forth wins and losses or they feel a need to try and get at least one win against the player.

I'd imagine the "Player constantly loses" team would essentially be this very "first thing I found works" sort of team, so it would consist of very common Pokemon for the region and probably wouldn't be very strong outside of the starter, whereas the "Player constantly wins" team would probably be employing more complex tactics (maybe if one of the starters is really slow the team is Trick Room, or for the Water starter it's a Rain team or some other weather/terrain based on the secondary types, or maybe have a new "Room" move that turns it into an inverse battle to really fuck with the player). And the teams in-between would more so reflect where they were winning and losing, like maybe one battle they're using more offensive leaning Pokemon but if they lose that battle then their final team might lean more defensive in response, that sort of thing.

This is definitely a complete pipe dream though given GF doesn't even give full movesets to the boss trainers for the main story anymore let alone doing anything that would require the game to check the player's wins and losses against certain flagged encounters (which I wouldn't be surprised if it were somehow bugged and some of the teams would just never show up).

Various rival ideas that I think would be funny

Asshole rival that takes the starter strong against yours, they're guaranteed to beat you during your first battle... you then precede to never encounter them again. You hear about their exploits now and then, but after winning the league they fucked off to another region.

Rival where you beat them enough times they legit retire. Like you keep expecting them to appear again before the league but if you go back to their house on route 1 you find them hitting the books because clearly this was never going anywhere.

Rich rival that you can never win against who blocks your path. When you beat them they heal their pokemon back up and restart the battle so the only way to continue the game is to lose. People throughout the journey will mention you constantly losing to him and at the end of the game he offers you a shit ton of money to take a dive. Post game you find out he hired a PR firm to ruin your reputation to the point everyone believes you cheated.

A wally type rival who's your younger sibling that your parent(s) asked you to watch over. You can bully them throughout the game to the point they go full kieran. Like suggesting which starter for them to pick and then picking the stronger one and beating them effortlessly.

I want him to be a huge cunt
>>
>>59069959
Give me the other gender MC as a rival and make them fall in love with the playable MC.
>>
>>59069959
Cute girl with small but round tiddies and butt.

I haven't played any of the recent games, but I didn't really care for the friendly rivals in the games I did play. They don't all have to be assholes but there should be some actual tension with you, maybe jealousy with plot consequences like >>59070040 said, or maybe they sell you out to the evil team who you are messing with, something to give the player a reason to care about fighting them.
>>
>>59069959
I don’t care if they’re mean or if they pick the advantageous starter. Just make them a relative worthwhile challenge
>>
>>59069959
Have him/her being your cousin
>>
>>59070040
Isn't that basically what happened with Kieran except for joining the evil team?
>>
>>59069959
Brown, friendly, and picks the starter weak to yours
>>
>>59070227
Leafgreen/firered already did that.
>>
>>59069959
Have the rival scripted to win their first battle to the point that even if you do win by hacking or somehow getting lucky, the game still proceeds as if you lose
>>
You mean wiwa?
