What triggers it? I swear sometimes all I do is KO like two Pokémon and then it does this.

I have no clue. I've had times where I play the game for hours at a time and it does a normal save, and another where I play for like an hour and it takes a minute to save
>>

it usually happens because you caught a new pokemon or messed around in the pc

If you move withdraw/deposit/move anything in the PC Box, you're guaranteed to get the *saving a lot of data* shit. I've heard playing off a flashcart or twilight menu makes the saving instant, i never tried, but playing a rom on an emulator sure doesn't make it instant.

poor coding

Reminder this is how Gen 2 would have been if Iwata didn’t carry game freak’s bum asses and optimize their spaghetti code

Funfact - it exist in all pre-Switch games except Gen I, but DPP are the only games having separate message due to low writing speeds for DS carts.
Pokemon games with excwption of Switch titles and Gen I have two ways to save - one that skips PC (the largest part of save are your Pokemon in PC) and one that skips it. When you choose to save, game checks if you used PC since the last save and picks the quicker method if nothing has changed there.

Really? I've played every gen quite a lot, I don't recall having any saves that took longer
>>

It's because any other Nintendo's handheld has quite fast writing speeds and the difference is negligible unless you have like literal hundreds of Pokemon in the boxes. It's just DS that is so sluggish that Gamefreak decided to inform players when saving is taking longer. Obviously it just created more confusion and unnecessary rage so they removed it in the next gen, lmao.

For a funny reference - DS Phat/Lite can load DS Roms from a cheapo GBA flashcart just about fine, but if you want to load GBA rom through DS flashcart, you can do it only with later models that have an entire additional microprocessor inside.

Why it is like that? Because GBA had much faster Read/Write speed than DS.

Because Game Freak went overboard with making the game check for corrupt data when saving. I think it's like two whole sweeps of every space and every Pokemon in every box to make sure all the data is in place. It's not nearly a problem in HG/SS or the Gen5 games; "Saving a lot of data" usually only comes up if corrupted data is found and they need to revert to the backup save.

All Iwata did was make a way to compress graphics.

Genius coding more like, the fact that all of the data of each pokemon in each box is retained losslessly is amazing.
