ITT stupid things you thought as a kid

In even Gen 3 or Gen 4 there was a trainer who after you beat them, if you talked to them again they would say caught Pokemon are stronger than wild Pokemon. They are clearly talking about EVs, but as a kid I thought it meant something else like bonus stats points each level. So I was also trying to catch the lowest level Pokemon in the wild to get an extra level or two to get extra "stats".
>>
I didn’t know moves were either physical or special so I just picked the ones with the highest base power regardless of my Pokémon’s actual attack / sp attack stats
>>
>>59112563
the old games were made for kids like you, that's why there were so many mixed attackers
>>
That’s not that stupid that’s not an illogical conclusion to come to especially as a child
Most children would ignore it honestly you overthought it
>>
>>59112563
>physical or special

What was Nintendo thinking in Gen 1-3 with this? Why would all Dark types be specific only for example? Bite/Crunch makes no sense as special.
>>
>>59112553
that was as close to being right on the money as you possibly could have been really
>>
>>59112553
I used to only have male pokemon and would never use a single female in my party, guess I just thought they were lame to use as a young boy.
I also only used damage dealing moves and thought my opponents were wasting turns when they boosted their stats.
>>

It was so that there would be an equal number of physical types and special types. The real solution would've been to swap Ghost to special and make Dark physical.
>>
>>59112656
Ghost was physical? So Gengar with Shadow Ball does jackshit damage?
>>
>>59112668
Correct, and it's Lick's fault because it was the sole Ghost Type move that did damage in gen 1.
>>
>>59112676
>did damage
Did non-fixed damage, not to imply that Ngiht Shade wasn't a damaging move.

For some reason I used to think that Water was super effective against Poison. Everytime I would encounter a Nidoking or Nidoqueen I would use Surf and OHKO them, it wasn't until 10 years later I realized it was because they were Ground types.

When I was a kid Nidoking was my fav mon, but I didn’t knew how to get him to evolve, so I just assumed it evolved by trading and since I didn’t have friends to trade I thought it was that way for a long time.
I mean who would have thought of using a moonstone on a poison type
>>

I always forget it’s early evolutions are based on a rabbit. Also, it’s only like 4 feet tall. It should be at least six.
>>

>ITT stupid things you thought as a kid
dragonite was a weaker subspecies of Charizard
>>
>>59112563
I just assumed that contact moves were physical and non-contact were special.

I swear in the anime its like the same size as rhydon

For me it was fire. I conflated a lot of poison types also being grass or bug with poison being weak to fire and it made sense in my mind because fire can be used to sterilize objects

Coincidentally, being Japanese might have slightly helped with that problem. The equivalent to the Man on the Moon over there is a rabbit pounding mochi, which is about the only thing resembling a clue to the evolution method. That's still more than Jigglypuff where the only clue is "the other cute pink round thing evolves with it", but without any of the weird space stuff going on with Clefairy.
>>
>>59112955
I don't even think I saw Nidos as rabbits as a kid. Pikachu resembled a stylized rabbit, while they looked more like weird lizard adjacent monsters.

In FireRed, I tried evolving my Eevee into an Umbreon after I got the National Dex. Later, I realized that day and night time doesn't exist in FRLG. I was pissed.

Crits don't ignore defense. The only reason it does more than double is because it already broke through your defense

If GF weren't retarded that's how they would've started.

I mean that's how EVs work
>>
>>59113199
No, contact moves are moves that make your pokemon touch the opponent, like close combat. "Ranged" moves like earthquake are physical but aren't contact moves
>>
>>59113199
Grass knot is special contact
Rock blast is non-contact physical
>>
>>59112668
Plenty of others too, like most Psychic types.
Off the top of my head Metagross was the only physical mon who missed Shadow Ball going into gen 4.
>>
>>59112553
I used to think evolving a pokemon at a lower level led to higher stats by level 100, so you had to decide if it's worth getting moves earlier and having worse stats in the long run, but apparently you can evolve a pokemon at level 99 and they'll have the same stats at level 100 as a pokemon that evolved at level 1.
>>
>>59112648
>I used to only have male pokemon and would never use a single female in my party, guess I just thought they were lame to use as a young boy
Me too. But the thing is, I only used male Pokémon because I was 100% sure they were stronger than the females and that female Pokémon had worse stats by default.
I also believed that all Pokémon caught with a Poké Ball were weaker than if you caught them with a Megaball or Ultraball
>>
>>59113551
I heard that was the case in Gold/Silver, that female pokemon had weaker attack stats, and having a weaker than average attack DV was actually how they determined if it's a female.
>>
>>59113570
Well, glad to know that little old me was partially right
>>
>>59112563
Same
Also never heard of STAB until I started browsing the internet around Gen 5
>>
>>59113742
I remember seeing a signpost for it in SS and thus assuming that it meant the same type moves were all you should run. I had a Typhlosion with Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Eruption, and Blast Burn.
>>
>>59112553
I always thought that because the amount of damage dealt was randomized, move power didn't really matter, so I went through all of Pokemon Pearl with an Infernape that knew Cut, Rock Smash, Flame Wheel and Ember.
