Did Steelix save Onix in your opinion? Onix is pretty much a useless Pokemon due to stats. Does Steelix redeem the Onix line?
>>
Uh well you can't really use it in a campaign so steelix might as well not exist for all i care
>>
>>59112653
>Monferno used Vacuum Wave!
>>
Mega Steelix redeemed it.
>>
>>59112653
>trades its grass weakness for the much more devastating fire weakness
lol no
>>
>>59112653
Onix still should get a branched evolution where it keeps it's Rock typing. That way Brock can have an ace that matches his Gym.
Onix remains one of the most popular Pokemon. The Pokemon Company should recognize this.
>>
>>59112667
Not design wise. The mega is ugly as fuck.
>>
>>59112677
It's cool as fuck.
>>
>>59112662
You can absolutely use Steelix in a campaign if you aren't poor or stupid.

I would take fire over 4x water and grass weakness. Are you drunk?

actual impossible opinion to have

When it was first revealed I didn't even like Steelix's design. I thought the teeth and oversized head made it look goofy, and the prongs along it's body made no sense in terms of how it was supposed to dig tunnels. I liked it even less when people pointed out to me it was supposed to be a shovel.
Over the years I've significantly mellowed on both it and the mega's designs - I don't think they're really that bad. Not in comparison to some of the designs we've gotten in the years since, at least. And fanart has helped.
Still, I would like to see Onix buffed significantly or maybe given an alternative evolution.
>>
They did a very good job introducing dark and steel types in gen 2. All excellent designs imo, you could tell they gave them special attention. Foretress kind of a tier below compared to the others though

Oh wait I'm in a compfag thread, welp
>>
>>59112677
I don't know how I feel about the shovel jaw but the crystals are cool.
>>
>>59112653
it's funny to me how many games let you catch one in the wild, you don't see Scizor pulling this as often as Steelix does
>>
>>59112690
Bastard still only has 75 HP/65 Special Defense, it's gonna get struck down pretty hard by any super effective special attacker with STAB worth its weight.
>>
No, onix and steelix need stat buffs, onix needs a new prevo, and a new alt evo.
>>
>>59112718
>Oh wait I'm in a compfag thread, welp
insane takeaway
>>
>>59112784
I remember when Joe reported on wild steelix when gen 4 first came out. In that moment I thought they jumped the shark

lived in a neighborhood with kids during G/S, I could trade easily.

What really mattered was postgame i.e. Stadium, Colleseum, Battle revolution. Shit really heated up and a generic play through team wasn't going to cut it.
>>
>>59112653
Steelix is a shitmon with 85 attack.
Mega Steelix is a shitter Mega Aggron, and Mega Aggron fails the "Is this worth using over Mega Salamence" question every Mega evolution must face.
Onix needs way more help than that.
>>
>>59112653
Maybe if it had 100 attack, at least.
>>
>>59112880
>>59112879
Sheer Force.
>>
>>59112653
No. Onix still sucks ass.
>>
>>59112653
>Did Steelix save Onix in your opinion?
Both of them should have a BST of 540 and should be faster Steelix is literally modeled after a bullet train
>>
>>59112662
You can get Steelix without having to trade in every single Gen 4 game.
>>
>>59112895
85 Attack.
>>
>>59112848
How do you feel about finding wild 3rd stage pseudos?
>>
>>59112653
I mean
It's better?
But has some similar crippling flaws, it still explodes to random special attacks, and still doesn't hit very hard. Aggron is basically an improvement in every way, and isn't cancer to actually get.
I actually think Onix is better. Onix has three things it does well. It fucks Mars' Purugly in a nuzlocke, it's a pretty good lead in Little Cup, since it's actually really fast and can Sturdy Juice, and Rocky does pretty fine in Johto if you refuse to get Geodude for whatever reason, up to Whitney at least.
Steelix just kinda doesn't do anything. Looks cool, though, but that's not something Onix ever struggled with.
>>
>>59112718
Conpetitively: Steel and dark are hillarious. One, steel, was a massive sucess and been a consistent success ever since. Meanwhile it wasn't until gen 4 that dark started amounting to sonething.
>>
>>59112653
They should probably do a branch evolution that's pure rock so Brock can stop coping with an eviolite. That's my one complaint about Onix.
>>
>>59112653
I mean Steelix does at least make it an evolutionary line that can serve as a jobber into the late-game for the main story. Personally I prefer Onix's design, I think the underbite of Steelix just makes it look uglier as well as it losing Onix's prominent horn (yeah Steelix has the two smaller horns but it's not really the same). I don't really know why but I don't mind it as much when Onix shows up in games compared to Geodude.
>>
>>59112653
Onix is pretty good in games where it's available early. Notably it shits on first three gyms in Johto, same with the Purugly and Skuntank early in Sinnoh.
Like yeah, it will not 1hko anything and after a while you'll drop it but before that it's just good enough to put it in front of anything that can't hit it for SE damage.
>>
>>59113391
And probably partially iintentionally in both gens you get slightly better Rock-type around the time you'll want to drop Onix from the team. Sudowoodo is literally right after Goldenrod and Nosepass can be caught and immediately evolved in Mt.Coronet.
>>
Why is Onix so weak? It’s almost unusable in single player unless your IVS are good and you max SPDEF EVs.
>>
>>59113704
Rock types in gen 1 weren’t intended to be used in a playthrough, they’re just there to add texture to the world and give kids more to collect. Same with shitmons like Seel, Goldeen etc.
They also show us that a Pokemon looking tough or cool isn’t the same as being worth adding to a team

It wasn’t until gen 3 where they begin to apmost make sense in a team. Gen 2 had tyranitar but he’s literally not obtainable in a normal playthrough unless uou want to spend hours grinding right before Red

The mistake we make as fans is expecting that all pokemon are supposed to be usable in a campaign
>>
>>59113755
>Rock types in gen 1 weren’t intended to be used in a playthrough
Thats bullshit. The gen 1 movepools are so pathetic that rock types completely wall more than half the trainers in the game.
Team rocket npcs all have shit like ekans, koffing, golbat, ratticate for example. There's bird and normal trainers everywhere that don't have fighting or ground moves like in later games. Rock types own a gen 1 playthrough. Onix still sucks though because of his embarrassing stats, itll will win fights but it's fuckin slow.
>>
Steelix is such a great design
>>
>>59112895
Oh yeah, baby, sheer force Rock Slide, Crunch, and elemental fangs on something with 85 attack, that needs two turns of Rock Polish to start outspeeding things, tell me more hot stuff

Feraligatr has DDance, Sheer Force, 105 attack, Liquidation, Crunch & Ice Punch and is STILL not that great. Sheer force isn't the insta-GOAT you seem to think it is. Nidoking makes it work because it has the Kaiju TM dumpster movepool, has the rare ability to do this mixed, and has enough speed to actually outspeed a few things. And even then, it's not great, just decent. (Also I see more scarfed sets than LO these days anyways, so it still isn't fast enough)
>>
>>59112662
just have friends
just play gen 4
>>
>>59112674
>That way Brock can have an ace that matches his Gym.
That would be fun, but people would hate it on principle that it's not part of the OG 151 like Magmortar or Electivire. So lots of Gen I characters are going to be stuck with Kanto Aces for the rest of their lives. At least Misty and Sabrina have good mons to call aces

>Onix remains one of the most popular Pokemon. The Pokemon Company should recognize this.
Not really. Onix is treated as a joke in the community for having an attack stat weaker than a butterfly. It being the first boss in the franchise is really its only appeal
>>
>>59113755
Onix is the only one that sucked. You could easily have graveler or golem carry you thanks to the game being stuffed with poison and flying types
>>
>>59114868
>Not really.
That's just Onix's /vp/ reputation. You must have missed this thread from the other day: >>>59104169
>>
>>59114876
Gen 2 proves this
Gen 2 Geodude/Graveler is one of the single best ingame pokemon of all time.
It fucking DEMOLISHES the region, doesn't even matter if you can't get Golem.
>>
>>59112674
Crystal Onix wen
Rock/Water type that goes special, and uses the special moves Onix learns for whatever reason
>>
>>59113755
>It wasn’t until gen 3 where they begin to apmost make sense in a team.
>Same game as Nosepass, Torkoal, Slaking, Solrock, Lunatone and Salamence (good, but you don't get until beating Wallace)

Fuck no dude Hoenn has way too many shitmons legitimately designed to be bosses for you to overcome and then forget about. Even the better ones like Torkoal and Slaking are basically challenge-run material and not must haves. There is no game where "every mon is viable" because Game Freak intentionally litters shitmons in the game as dex filler rather than needing to balance every single new mon possible since ~100 new mons every 3 years is practically impossible to balance. You might have to wait years for your favorite shitmon scrimblo to get buffed in a way that it finally becomes viable

>>59113821
Onix is the fastest of the Rock types that isn't a Fossil. You'll just get similar results using Rhyhorn or Graveler to Onix and those have better rewards in the long run even sticking with them

In the anime it seemed to be more vulnerable to Fire-type attacks, so you could keep Rock/Ground and just give it Dry Skin (or a renamed/stronger version)
