It always stayed uncomfortably familiar while steadily changing more and more. You have the show in S1, the premise, the plot, the cast. Then (excluding the temporary Tracey thing), Ash gives up a long standing Pokemon or two here and there. Then in Johto slowly one by one Ash’s classic team he’s had since the start leaves or is retired. By Master Quest even Bulbasaur. Then in the middle of Master Quest the animation changes to digital. Then in Hoenn, no slow change, complete mon reset. No more Misty. No more Arbok and Weezing. And then a season later the entire dub cast was thrown out and replaced. Then in Sinnoh, they finally retire Brock. Oh and it’s widescreen now.By the time of Unova and Kalos it’s really just Ash, Pikachu, Jessie, and James. Everyone and everything else is gone, old charafters relegated to maybe a one episode comeback (Misty showing up in one Hoenn episode, May showing up to challenge Dawn in a contest, Dawn showing up in Unova once) and old Pokemon related to the League. Oh and a Wobbuffet Jessie picked up in Johto became permanent. Somehow. That’s why when Sun and Moon suddenly brought back Brock and Misty for a while and suddenly Jigglypuff was back I knew it was nearing the end. They stopped the anime canon movies too
>>59113003There's a screenshot of Jessie and James retiring with all of the Pokemon they caught along the way and it always makes me sad because Arbok and Weezing aren't in it for some reasonHere's a shitty low-res tweet of it because search engines are ass
It probably wasn't their intention, but I felt like Ash's journey truthfully mirrors growing up. Over time you less and less of those original friends. He travels the world, meets new people. Slowly shedding how things used to be. By Kalos he's on his own and feels more like an independent person in his group. The only constant is his main Pokemon.
>>59113019That’s also what made stuff like Sceptile showing up in the Sinnoh League or Charizard coming back for a couple episodes in Unova feel special. Like brief peaks to an old friend. Same with the tradition they had of last gens girl character showing up for an episode in the new region. (Unova was also where they updated the Joys to not violate the Geneva conventions and got rid of Chansey nurses)Kalos was definitely the most cut off though, very few old Mons returned for anything, they never brought back Iris for an episode.Sun and Moon suddenly reversing that and bringing back a lot of old faces in hindsight probably meant they had already decided they were gonna have Ash win this region and then treat Galar as a finale region to fluff with fanservice.
>>59113014I think they were originally protected like Pikachu was in Johto, Jessie’s Lickitung got traded for Wobbuffet in S4 and James traded Victreebel for another Victreebel and then released it in S5. (Speaking of which, I always found it kind of weird that both of them suddenly got secondary mons in the back half of Kanto within a couple episodes of eachother, especially since James apparently had Weepinbell prior). But once Hoenn came along they were just too outdated and had to be retired. They lasted a good long while. I think at the time they were only behind Pikachu and Meowth in how long they were active. (Though Wobbuffet eventually overtook them by Sinnoh). I think they’re tied for 4th and Bulbasaur is 5th.
I still have zero clue how Wobbuffet someone survived being culled when he wasn’t even an OG. He was the Johto replacement for Lickitung who Jessie accidentally traded away in the middle of Johto. How the hell did he become a mainstay
>>59113003Sometimes I wonder how the series would have ended if Tajiri and Takeshi had their way and the franchise ended after Johto. Probably something involving Ho-Oh. I sort of always imagined the I Choose You trilogy borrowed a lot of ideas from those old plans
>>59113003I actually had a talk about the pokemon anime with some people yesterday and i was the odd one out for not liking it, not considering it canon and how its a poor source for anything in-universe. For what its worth and its target audience its servicable, but it definitely doesnt feel like the definite experience to have pokemon in animation. Now, im pokemania old and i wont argue that i did enjoy watching it back then, all the way up to Gen 3 seasons (since Gen 4 and onward they started airing only on subscription based channels) but looking back on it now, the issues are sticking out quite a bit. Plotlines repeated ad nauseam, barely any character development painfully simple animation and an incredible amount of anime original content to the point that completely alters the source material.I find things like Generations and Origins a lot more enjoyable, not simply because i can point at the screen and go "YOOOO THIS IS THE THING FROM THE GAMES!!!" but also because there's genuine faithfulness to the source material and really builds on it, bringing everything to life in an entertaining way rather than be a 30 min long franchise commercial for kids that dont know better.
>>59113039>Sun and Moon suddenly reversing that and bringing back a lot of old faces in hindsightIt's called cheap nostalgia pandering.>probably meant they had already decided they were gonna have Ash win this regionWe literally know from the teraleak that Yuyama wanted trAsh to lose the baby league still. It's only after people finally told him to fuck off from all the Kalos League backlash that they finally him win the pity league.>and then treat Galar as a finale region to fluff with fanservice. We also know from the teraleak that Ash fucking off was also decided on midway into shitneys. You're a retarded dumb ass nigger.
>>59113218Anime is just really poor for binge watching. It's pretty nice and relaxing to watch on tv. Comparable to a police drama. But as a whole it just doesn't really work.

>>59113003Sounds like the anime did everything they shouldn't done with long running anime. Because long running anime remains long running by keeping the original cast intact while adding new characters. That's why Pokemon anime started going downhill from Best Wishes because Brock left. I bet Ash + Brock + New Lead girl + Team Rocket Trio can carry this anime for another 20 years as long as the anime respect Ash's progression.
>>59114246What's a good example of a long running anime to you?
>>59114246The team rotation was to give Ash the ability to show off new Johto mons, and in Johto they specifically made an effort to do it gradually. Bulbasaur lasted until near the end of Johto. The original plan was to end after Johto, and they retired Misty. But they wanted to showcase new characters rather than get locked into two Kanto gym leaders forever, hence bringing in May. Brock stuck around because their initial attempt to replace him in the Orange Islands got huge backlash, but he kept getting shoved into a back spot by Max and later Barry and at the end of Sinnoh they finally decided to get rid of him.
>>59113014They need manga ending where they are happily married. Also, their Arbok and Weezing return.Truly, when I watched Pokemon anime as a kid, to me Team Rocket where the soul of the show.
>>59114282>>59113014It was dumb as shit Journeys never brought back Arbok and Weezing, zero closure on them despite them being in the franchise longer than anyone else besides Ash's Pikachu, Meowth, and Wobuffet. (Two permanent start to finish characters and one who somehow upgraded to that status) Same with Ash's Primeape
>>59114251Doreamon, Crayon Shin-chan, One Piece, Detective Conan, Maruko-chan. Anime that run for over 10 years continuously as their original cast remained intact. Only Precure and Yugioh changed protagonist however Yugioh went downhill with each series until it got shut down while people watch Precure for new cute magical girls as this anime keep repeating the same formula with minor change. .
>>59114280Which turned out to be a mistake, replacing Misty only work because most Anipoke watcher are males and they likes to see new cute girls as mentioned by the former director of Pokemon anime. However replacing Brock started to take away the old charm of anime. Imagine Ash and Brock joining Liko's journey instead of 5 useless adult and a cheap Ash-clone with favoritism. Liko could have played the role of the straightman of the group often dealing with Ash's rush eccentric behavior and Brock being goofy around older woman. Remember Brock alone can replace 4 member of RVT as he is a better leader than Friede, better cook than Murdock, better doctor than Molly and has better words of advise than Ladlow. The only one he can't replace is Orio because he is not a mechanic.
