Will China ever get a region? Or is the historical and political beef too much?

It will probably happen eventually. Maybe not a 1:1 region like France, the Uk and Spain got however. I'm guessing it'd get the Unova treatment, lots of obvious ties in with China but geographically quite distinct and little to no reference to actual Chinese history.

Probably sooner than you think. It's easy enough to "genericize" China in a way that wouldn't make virulently racist Japanese people pissed off. You could make a vaguely Chinese slurry region incorporating multiple countries in a way you couldn't for South Korea, for example.
