Have some of the legendary mystery elements as subplots for later stories and Team Rocket as the villains. Have Brock, Misty and Ash/Red or some new OCs with a similar dynamic or arc.

Charizard looks a bit derpy but like red/blue sprite derpy. Lickitung is a perfect adaptation. I'm not going to bother checking a movie I saw a decade ago, but that Gengar can't possibly be real, can it? Imo, if you're making Gengar "realistic" you should make it a little frog-like. Gastly is like a frog egg floating in the water. Haunter is like a poliwog swimming around in the water, more distinguished face, and has developed one set of limbs (though they're hands instead of hind legs). Gengar's body and head are basically the same thing, like adult frogs and it's commonly depicted using it's tongue as an attack. It could even be a horned toad (possibly related to the Bulbasaur line?).
