A person is made up of both their positive and negative characteristics. Ash could be smarter, emphatic and wiser but he can still be emotional immature, sarcastic, boastful. Even real world genius weren't perfect. Nobody wanted a cool humble chivalrous action hero Ash on XY series, they just wanted him to win the freaking league already which he failed to do on XY&Z. Truth is if Ash remained boastful , sarcastic and emotionally immature but still won the Kalos League than he would have been the best Ash. .Most long running protagonist never changes their personality, they just become stronger and smarter.

Included some reunions with old characters like Cilan from BW, Tracey from the Orange Islands, Lapras, the Squirtle Squad, Pidgeot, lots of old Ash and Team Rocket Pokemon, etc. It has an overarching story arc where Latias watches Ash and eventually makes him rescue Latios from a poacher, but it's not really the driving conflict of the series.It was sort of a mixed bag but I enjoyed watching it as it aired. Just don't expect an epic conclusion to Ash's story arc. It seemed like they were trying to recapture the spirit of the early seasons when storylines were looser and most episodes focused on Ash and co stumbling into and subsequently resolving random, low-stakes conflicts.
