Naturally it was easier to impose your own expressions onto them when they where just pixels but the idea remained the same even in 3D.Yet zoomers could not understand this and made fun of the SM MCs always being blankfaced, which is how we now have MCs that emote. Entirely defeating the point of silent protagonists in the first place and causing disconnect when they emote completely differently to how you envision they would emote.
