If I were to describe Champions in one word it would be “Serviceable”. Mechanically it works as a battle sim, the training system is nice and missing items/Pokemon can be added in time. But all of that already existed so it was basically given to the developers for free. All they had left was the presentation. It was a chance to focus on nothing but the battle screen, make it shine. As people in this thread have pointed out, there were a lot of opportunities and possibilities. So to see it just be serviceable is really disappointing. You can still have fun with it, but it really isn’t a product that’s worth money beyond maybe the starter pack.

I can't imagine paying the subscription the box space when Home exists, and the Battle Pass being full of dogshit cosmetics nobody cares about right now is a huge problem. Part of the reason Concord and Highguard failed (beyond the games not being great and having no direction) are the fact that the art style they picked was bad and the character designs weren't great, you can't sell cosmetics for that shit (I feel particularly bad for the Highguard artist because their art looks better and they were in charge of micro-transactions too so the entire rest of the team failed them specifically). Put outfits of characters from other Pokemon games in there, you don't even have to start with hard ones; RBG/HGSS Brock, GS Morty, and Sophocles' shirts are super easy and you could just retexture some really basic shirts. Big ticket fancy costumes can be in some other more expensive form.
