Because it was being touted as the official destination for competitive Pokemon battling only for it to come out and have no Pokemon, zero items, no alternate modes for battling, and no single player anything. It's getting hate because it set expectations and failed to meet them, and now VGC players are stuck playing gimped Pokemon while they dripfeed us comp standard items over the next year.
You can't even argue that it's for balance or wanting a fresh metagame or anything, because Incineroar is still in the game and on virtually 60% of teams if not more. This game isn't gonna appeal to casuals because not all the Pokemon are in, and they can't do brain off 6v6 or literally any other format, anyone who actually plays comp, casually or otherwise, is asking where the fuck any of the items are, and all the hardcore professional grinders are just stuck with a VGC that has nothing in it. This leaves little kids who and normalfags who are both gonna get sick of whatever meta this game settles on after 2 months.

The real question is why people's gut reaction when a Pokemon game comes out to bad reviews is to suck it up and start defending it. This is a lackluster product they're trying to profit off of, people are right to be upset.

I think they've already said that over time, they'll rotate the Pokémon available on this app, which means that Pokémon available today on Champion might not be available in a few months.

If it only concerns ranked battles, I wouldn't mind because it allows for a renewal of the metagames and various seasonal changes, which is genuinely a good idea. However, if we can't use the Pokémon we want in unranked free modes because they're rotating them, then it almost completely defeats the purpose of the platform. Not being able to do 6v6 is already a problem, but if, on top of that, I want to, for example, create a team of Ultra Beasts and I can only use them when I'm allowed to, it's even worse. This does not solve the dexcut problems in cartbridge.

While I can understand if all the content isn't available from the start to keep the game fresh and ease newcomers into it, if future decisions don't resolve anything in a lasting way, it's definitely rubbish.

It's a live service game. You can complain about it being half baked but that is how it is by design. Live service games on launch are bare bones, they are meant to be templates that get filled in later throughout the lifespan of the game. If it's too bare bones for you then come back in 6 months there will probably be double the amount of pokemon and game modes by then.

Not many and most that do had it added AFTER launch. The fact remains Champions was never advertised to have a single player mode and in the multiple reveals and overviews we got it was never even hinted at so expecting it was fucking stupid. Its not that it "checks" every second or so, in networking a packet opens up a session that connects with the service and can have time to live times of 1 minute or more, the problem is that if your wifi connection drops the session it starts a new one probably giving you and error and this type of online only games has more severe checks than say regular online of paid mainline games. Also it doesn't use nintendo network but a third party service.

This is exactly why people are mad. This game is supposed to be the standard they use for official VGC, but is lacking the majority of items and a shitton of Pokemon.

I think this is the key issue with Champions, actually. They want this to be the central hub for battling, but they also want to profit off of it. The fucks at Gamefreak/TCPI/ILCA are far too cheap to put the effort into making this game a proper spiritual successor to the Stadium series, so instead of giving us a proper Pokemon experience and building the game up into being some kind of faux Battle Frontier sim or something, they strip out Pokemon and items and drip feed them to us via currencies and battle passes to make a profit.

The two main aspects of this game (VGC sim and F2P Pokemon batlting sim) are at odds with one another because they can't make money if they don't sell old shit back to us (due to putting literally nothing else in this game), but we can't have any worthwhile VGC gameplay with how little is in the game currently. Everyone knows about regulations and limited dexes, it's insulting that you bring that up like it's new info, but the key difference between going from USUM to SWSH and SV to Champions is that you could still use your fucking Life Orb in every regulation up until now.

We all know the first Champions-based tournament is going to be an absolute abortion and the turnout is going to crater relative to the SV highs. Worlds will still be Worlds but I expect at least one highly contentious win involving a bug or crash that will overshadow the actual competition.

Eventually Champions will manage not to suck, but it will be a long time before that happens and a lot of damage will be done in that interim.

my biggest gripe is that this game was announced a year and 2 months ago on pokemon day, and prob being developed for at least a year before, and for those 2 years of development, there's really not much to show, it reused a lot of assets from the main games saving a lot of time, it's just a sliced up combat simulator from the mainline games, and so if it took 2 years to develop i would imagine it would have much more than 3 battle arenas, limited pokemon, 2 types of battles, and the most embarrasing of all, only like 40 items, with around 18 of those being berries.
Like where did that development time went to, because you can't tell me you spend a whole year just making animations, while we're still waiting for a switch 2 version that should've been at release, and a phone version that will probably be here in 3 more months at best.

This game desperately needs some single player shit if they don’t want player numbers to go down doesn’t even need to be anything fancy just get some NPC models and and a model for a character people like

Not since Gen 6 has VGC removed items, though. Like if they said "hey we're keeping the items limited on launch to make Megas look better" I'd be annoyed but I'd accept it's temporary. The fact key defensive items like the Safety Goggles, Covert Cloak, Assault Vest, and Clear Amulet are just gone with no indicator when or if they'll be back not only greatly limits team building, it also over centralizes the already small meta and makes games more boring to play and watch. Like random one-off Reg I regionals right now are more interesting than what NAIC and Worlds are shaping up to be.

I don’t think anyone expected or even wanted all pokemon to be legal in ranked but a pretty sizeable chunk of people were hoping to use private battles as an alternative to Showdown for stuff and have the option to play differently than the current VGC regs. I mean for fuck’s sake, marketing materials leading up to the launch and even iconography IN THE GAME MENUS show items, pokemon, and mechanics simply not present in the title at all.

There’s two different complaints here that seem to overlap but aren’t the same: complaints about how limited Champions is as a game, and complaints about how limited M-A is as a regulation format. They’re different complaints but both are valid.

I feel like a big part of this is the fear that if 6v6 singles is included, people will just play that instead of VGC doubles, and they really want to force people to like VGC doubles. But the more I think about that argument the less sense it makes.

No, it's the inherited battle facility rules.
It's an artificial format we have had to deal when fighting in facilities or with rentals as a base.
The first time it was pushed for multiplayer it wasn't that well received for a reason.

It's a forced standard grandfathered into multiplayer were people should be able to decide what to do.
