I got started playing hand-me-down copies of Red and Crystal with my older brother, got Sapphire and FireRed when I was old enough to have my own console, experienced Platinum and HGSS with everybody at school, and people my age weren't growing out of it until BW/2. also got to play all the spinoffs from Stadium and Snap up to Explorers of Sky as a kid, was watching reruns of the original anime while also going to see the 3rd gen movies. merchandise and cards from the first two gens were still widely available and hadn't become absurdly overpriced out of nostalgia yet. basically got to experience the first four generations nearly simultaneously. shit was so peak.
