2v2 is way more skill-based
>targeting decisions let mindgames outplay stats, a well-placed double up can win the game and it’s almost impossible for “outspeed and oneshot” strats to work due to spread damage reduction
>bring 4 ruleset means you almost never have a party that can answer any threat, you have to understand your opponent and pick to counter what they’ll bring
>item clause means you can’t just slap choice / orb / lefties on every fucking mon, you have to choose who can capitalize the most on a given item, which makes it harder to create offensive or defensive redundancies and exposes your win condition to disruption more if you aren’t careful

The speed of the battles (because it’s 2x as many actions per turn) changes the balance, it makes powerful effects with a short turn duration more potent, and minor effects with endless turn duration less potent, which is helpful for the balance of status and hazards, which is another positive though I wouldn’t say that it’s more skill expressive
