They seemingly evolved their flightlessness separately from each other.

Really? In Australia we're taught that tge Kiwi population in Australia eventually evolved into emu and cassowary while the NZ population just shrank.

Actually studies suggest they may have shared a common ancestor (well tbhdesu all life on Earth technically has a shared ancestor but when biologists say common ancestor they mean something much closer to today)
