how do we keep shinies but banish the psychopathy of "shiny hunters" from the community? what if shinies were generated based on hardware so each switch could only potentially produce shinies of one or two species and it would be impossible to know unless you run into it organically

You make them more common, like 1 in 50, and take out the silly sparkle animation. Then you add 1-2 more shiny colors for each pokemon so players can really personalize their team better. Now they're not that rare, just a cool alt color scheme. Shiny hunters don't actually care about the shiny pokemon, they care about getting a rare thing, and if it's not hard to get they won't try.
