Stop being zoomish. The old show and manga made it seem like Pokemon were completely separate from regular animals and were a somewhat new phenomenon

The Cerulean gym in the manga introduced a whale with several fins before the creation of Wailord

>if animals were in pokemon, they'd go extinct!
yeah because that's what happens in real life with predators right?
>>
>>59173727
Yes. A sufficiently strong predator can make a species extinct.
>>
>>59173727
The humans who couldn't take a flamethrower or electric shock went extinct, leaving only the ones who could.

Back then Pokemon were weird monsters who existed in the wild alongside animals. This was back when Kanto was literally Kanto, an area in Japan, and not a location in the Pokeworld. Over time the direction of the series changed and the Pokeworld was established instead of it being on Earth, so Pokemon replaced animals as the native fauna.

It makes things awkward when you get into the logistics of Pokemon discovery and Professor Oak starting a Pokedex when Laventon started one centuries prior, discovering a bunch of Pokemon that are never found in Kanto. Just another case of early-installment weirdness being difficult to write around now.

For me, this all went to hell when Johto appeared in the anime:

"Hey, we discovered a new region, literally next door to your house!"

They also couldn't decide if Pokémon are a new discovery or if humanity has coexisted with them for thousands of years. For example, the Lugia movie shows birds being worshipped as gods, or ancient temples with the image of Mew.

This makes sense as a video game; the first installment was a success, so they created a new region. But within the internal lore of that world, it doesn't make sense, so I prefer the current version. The Pokémon world is an alternate world with certain similarities to our own, but its fauna consists of Pokémon, and they're slowly erasing the presence of real animals from the first games. For example, the Indian elephant was replaced by Copperajah.

Yeah. And Lt. Surge went from "The Lightning American" to "The Lightning Lieutenant". He was clearly meant to be an American soldier who stayed in Japan, but now his home region (Unova? Orre?) is undefined and he was just "a lieutenant in a war, whose life was saved by Electric-type Pokemon". What war now?

Ohmori wanted to address this in SM, looking at the leaked story docs. We could have gotten real animal lore kino for three 20th anniversary.
>>
According to Shudo those were animation errors because of a lack of communication between the writers and the animation staff.

Seems like they wanted to revisit Shudo's idea for the series.
