Okay. When you get to Agate Village there's a small ledge right to the left of the entrance. You can walk into this ledge forever, and it will count for steps. So before you go to sleep, put Espeon in the daycare, go to that ledge, unplug your Gamecube controller, then hold up on the joystick before plugging it back in. That will make Wes auto-walk down, and effectively walk into the ledge forever. Steps will progress, leveling Espeon in the daycare. You can also fill your party with Shadow Pokemon, and walking will naturally purify them, so all you'll need to do is head to the Relic Stone to complete the purification.

Just unplug your controller and plug it back in when you wake up to reset the controls back to default, purify your Shadows, and retrieve Espeon. Really easy way to progress through the game.
