Pre-Gen 3 early 2000s is the most brutal time to be a Pokemon fan, bar none.

Still a very active online forum scene back then. Pokémasters was still top of the game, Serebii was a distant #2, Bulbagarden still had its forum.

But yes, it was very lonely outside of that and IRL. The event attendance dropped off a cliff.
