After getting it, you have 24 hours where you will ONLY get souvenirs. Go back to your buddy 3, wait until you get another item gift, open it, then check if you can get anymore gifts on your higher level buddies. Item gifts are 24hr cooldowns, souvenirs are 48-72 or something, it's a bit random. If you are gift eligible, everyone who can give a gift, either item or souvenir, will get a gift until you open one, which starts the cooldown until you can generate new ones.

I don't like the UI changes. The extra delay to show a fade-in/fade-out animation is small but noticeable when I'm flipping screens and conscious I'm standing still in crowded spaces. And I keep tapping the new 'events calendar' button by accident.
