If Green existed in the anime, then Misty probably wouldn't (at least as we know her), because they would've just given Misty's personality to Green, just without the Water-type obsession, and had Green been a traveling companion instead of Misty. Misty would've just been another gym leader Ash met, beat, and then never saw again. I highly doubt they would've just made Green a second rival with Gary if she had been available to the anime developers to be "the girl."

Misty is the named female game character closest to Red's age, has a proper design, and was liked by GF staff. Seeing Gary lose so unceremoniously should have destroyed Ash's limited view of the world and showed that becoming a good trainer would be a lot harder than he thought. If Ash's storyline ended after Kanto, it would have been cool to see him learn from this and start trying to become a good trainer. Instead of the Orange Islands, they could have done a timeskip showing a more mature Ash travel through Kanto again, reuniting with characters and Pokemon he met the first time around (Damian, Giselle, AJ, Haunter, Primeape, etc.). Could have been a nice epilogue arc.
