I never left Pokémon either, most of my friends didn't and we still occasionally play together. As we grew up we dropped the older gens for the new ones, though I personally don't like the newer gens that much.

It's pretty impressive to me how pokemon to this day uses the basis set up by RGB, even the stat distributions have remained consistent. They generally got it right the first time, everything after just refined it.
