Talonflame was good but never overpowered. 80 base attack means it relies on 120-power recoil moves to do significant damage, and between that and stealth rock it doesn't have the staying power to sweep whole teams.A theoretical pre-nerf gale wings combined with heavy duty boots would still not be game breaking, because Talonflame would really miss that choice band damage.
The real reason is that the brave birb is Fire/Flying, and so it posed a significant threat to Charizard's popularity and they couldn't have that. It's the same thing they keep trying to do with Greninja, which they reluctantly have to feature every now and then only because the frog is just that overwhelmingly popular merch-wise despite not being as shilled as the fat orange lizard and Lucario.

A STAB 120BP move with choice band should not be fucking priority. You can send in plenty of pokemon weak to ghost that can beat gengar. You can use plenty of ground weak pokemon to fight against garchomp, but talonflame is overly oppressive to anything weak to flying>just use rock attack!Which are all low accuracy. And a non retarded talonflame player isn't going to stay in on an obvious rockslide, they're going to just uturn out until your whole team has been chipped down. Then it has coverage and support moves in a pinch. Then fucking Z crystals gave it an even more powerful priority nuke. now gale wings is still great utility, but you can't spam brave bird
