This thread severely depresses me because I can't figure out how to do the starting thing where you lay out the shapes before you start drawing around that and lightfall and shadows.

Your favorite artists have never stopped drawing since they were kids and asian artists take a sketchbook everywhere in public, just for perspective.
No one in their 20s magically becomes good at drawing. Neuroplasticity sets in when you become older and it'll become difficult to learn to draw, even if you desperately want to.

after 25 years of barely being able to draw a stick figure I one day randomly decided I was gonna try tracing 3d models in blender to learn and now I draw mons all the time

You can't really teach people how to be creative, but you can certainly teach them how to paint. It's a mechanical skill that you can practice and gain practical knowledge about.
