I know that IV breeding / chain egg moves were an unreasonable timesink just in order to gain entry to the competitive side of the game, but there's got to be a middle ground between hatching hundreds of eggs, and just having to capture any Pokemon with the correct name and being able to trick them out however you want. I hardly feel like I am "raising" my own unique Pokemon any more, I'm just catching 1 to unlock all possible versions of it for battling

Yeah they sold it as getting to use the pokemans you actually caught and raised but you might as well just play pokemon showdown with how it ended up being
