The name "Meowth" got used a bit in Japan back then for that "hip and cool American" feel.
"Nyarth" and "Meowth" also map to each other enough that nips can easily read it as an Englishization of Nyarth, while something like "Jessie and James" wouldn't be understandable, hence the use of "Musashi and Kojiro" in picrel.

Good point. Meowth almost reads as a complete english transcription of Nyarth so it's not that weird for it to pop up in the Japanese version even though it sort of breaks the Pokemon name repeating concept
