For a while now they've been experimenting with the rival's presence in the story.Trying to break away from the "I might've lost this time but I won't quit getting stronger, SMELL YA LATER" and "Gosh, Player-san, you're so strong and cool I wish I was like you" archetypes.As for gen 9 I think Keiran was the best they ever did with a compelling character narrative. Enough flaws to be realistic but also having them work through their troubles.ZA characters got a lot of screen time and interactions, which was great in a lot of ways. But it felt closer to a throwback to the anime than it was a progression in storytelling. Most scenes had comedic overtones that, to me at least, made immersion more difficult if still enjoyable in it's own way.Taunie doesn't feel "real" but is also too fleshed out to easily headcanon her, like early gen characters who only had a handful of lines if you never watched the anime.
