We all know modern English cards are absolute crap and that only Japanese made ones are any good. But I ask /tcc/ when do we think that really took hold? Or put another way, what are your assessments of regional quality over the years?
Personally I have it broken down this way and try to collect as such:
>All WOTC made cards are high quality, printed on real sturdy stock, not prone to bleeding or curling
>MediaFactory "old back" cards vary but are generally junk, printed on thin stock that basically guarantees holo bleed and edge wear
>Old back glossy cards are much nicer feeling but the gloss scratches easy
>Japanese new backs continued to be on flimsy paper for years but
>English Nintendo era cards have always sucked, the EX holos are notorious for becoming Pringles but the paper stock seemed similar to WOTC
>at some point after Gen 4, English cardstock was changed to some very thin garbage while Japanese was improved vastly, by my estimation this during BW

>order first set of cards
>most of them are warped like crazy even after being in a top loader
Is this a Pokemon problem too? Wtf happened to card quality over the years?
>>
>>59227862
Cards warp from humidity and it's impossible to avoid. Foil cards get it worse since the foil curls more easily. Obviously it varies a little bit by make, see >>59227661
But truly there's nothing to be done, like you can use hard cases to try and mitigate the effect but top loaders for instance need to have some give to be able to get the card out... This is why slabs are nice in theory. Which, grading companies don't even consider curling a defect that can impact a grade anymore.

>>59228706
If they were gifts, why do you care? Don't be a jew.

I always liked that blastoise. I'm surprised how much it costs now even base set 2, but I guess I'm not a alone in liking it. Most of the first three sets' holo art is so static and boring, though. Ditto and Muk are the best I can think of, offhand, and they're still very basic.
>>
>>59228795
I'm talking to the guy I quoted who called them all fake news bro
>>
>>59228824
I disagree, most of the early sets actually don't use stock art on plain backgrounds, even for holos. There definitely are several and Base Set has it worst, but I really like the "boring" colored pencils and watercolor that most artists were using. Fossil Legendary Birds are amazing, Jungle Pidgeot as well
>>
>>59228824
Honestly base set 2 gets a bad rap seeing as how Legendary Collection which is also a reprint is super valuable

>>
>>59228922
Yeah, it's weird that everyone took collector sentiments from when it came out and just... Stuck to them. When cards were cheap sure, why have a reprint? But really nowadays there's no difference besides the set symbol and both are vintage... And Base 2 is the only way to get cosmos holos in English for those cards, outside of the controversial reverse holos, LC doesn't offer anything new.
>>
Let's talk binders! How do you organize your cards or separate them?
Personally, I like the zip binders with sewn in pages, but it's always agonizing to decide what to do with my cards. Currently, I have one binder dedicated to Wizards of the Coast cards, another for later English, and another for Japanese, but lately I've realized there were more Wizards cards that I want and don't have space in the current binder for and I'm dreading having to decide what to put where.
>>
>>59228963
I know, i wanted that one but the guy selling it sold it before to some chump

>>59228819
Original ninetales is very nice, it's because i can buy both that i'm still thinking which one to pick
>>
>>59228971
I remember at the time not being bothered by it because it was just more Pokemon cards to me. Would I like my Charizard, Venasaur and Blastoise to be all the same set? Sure but beggars can't be choosers.

>>59228984
By color since i don't know the number of the new ones and it's better than having a purple slowbro next to a blue slowbro. And i prefer to get the separate A4 protectors on a random binder
>>
>>59229076
I remember in the mid 2000s when Pokemon was dead that the common belief was that reprint sets represented the evils of WOTC and you didn't *really* own it if you had a reprint. I think much of the collector hate for Base 2 was simply that the set symbol is huge and literally marks your cards as second-rate.
>>
>>59228760
I don't care for the rainbow (or gold) secret rares
>>
>>59229086
It didnt help the base set 2 pack art was mid as hell
>>
>>59228984
I can't use a binder if it doesn't have pleasing art on the cover. Using a blank color is a huge disservice to the content within, like a book without a title.
Hardcover preferred.

The card pages themselves are organized by color-coordinated aesthetic or separated thematically according to my arbitrary autism.

So
If 30th Celebration is out in September, and the TCG isn't likely moving to a new series until Winds and Waves releases about a year after that
Then the market will probably begin correcting itself around this time next year
Hype for 30th anniversary cards will have largely passed over with it printed into the ground, people will be tired of Megaslop and people will have dumped some of their collections in order to purchase 30th stuff.

Some of the vendors at card shows are way way worse than ebay. They alway pull up some obscure app to determine market price (and 9/10 times I can buy it now for cheaper on ebay). No willingness to negotiate. A card was priced $55, it was $47 on eBay. I asked the vendor to do $50 cash and he said no we are firm on the market price. So I walked away and bought it online after. There are some normal vendors who seem like they actually like the hobby and collect themselves and are happy to discuss price and be reasonable. Some though are too obsessed with inflated or inaccurate "market" prices and percentages

I am the owner of a pretty bad condition Charizard ex from EX FRLG. I bought it several years ago for like 20 bucks, in truth it isn't exactly "damaged" like, it's all in one piece, but I think one of the corners is peeling and the card has a bad corner crease.
I feel little attachment to the card in such a shape, and am considering selling it since people are going nuts for all things Zard, but I know I'll never be able to buy another copy. How much realistically should I hope to get for it, should I sell it at all? I have Venu ex in a similar situation.
>>
>>59229293
>"market" prices and percentages

This. The utter babble I overhear about percentages at cons is so annoying. Its always scalpers just trying to scalp off other scalpers or just straight up ripping normal collectors off. As for "market price" it should be whatever the card is currently selling for - not what some bullshit app says. and notice how they never use recent sales on eBay or even TCG Player anymore, its always some no name one with inflated prices.

Opened it up and it was a fucking Bowser/jr plushie from Japan, fucking mailman delivered it to the wrong house
So instead of stealing it like a nig groid I walked down the street after work and brought it to the tendie's house. He has shit taste, should've ordered a fumo
Tldr alakazam arrived

Kino Medicham card.
Hey, maybe you can answer the question I asked twice to no avail in the last thread! How expensive is it to buy cards from Japan these days, in terms of shipping and customs and such, or are tariffs usually built into the prices? I haven't bought anything from overseas since the world went full retard.
>>
>>59229670
Modern Reverse Holos look like fucking shit compared to the Radient cards
>>
>>59229685
I've been ordering figures and other shit from Japan for years, recently even just ordered an orange GameCube, and some old games too
Long story short: it depends.
Pro tip before I start, if you consolidate and the total amount is over 200000 yen you'll get slapped with extra fees it's unavoidable
I did an experiment recently and consolidated to 199994 yen and didn't get hit with the extra fees.
Also if customs get their hands on your package you'll have to pay taxes, it's bullshit but it happens sometimes
As for prices, in general depending on your currency buying shit from Japan is cheap since the yen is weak ie a 10k yen card is more like 87$ etc
However even the Japanese are complaining about the prices of cards and boxes. We're currently in the big pokemon card boom as many Japs say in the YouTube comments section, some cards especially from card stores are overpriced 10 to 20 percent above what they should be maybe even more eg. Gardevoir MUR, gardevoir duo, inferno x zard sar, pokekyun garde, n's zekrom sar. If you buy a damaged copy it's cheaper, even A- or B rank is pretty much cleaner than eBay slop.
The above is factoring in if you're buying from amiami or from a proxy service (avoid zenwhatever)
If you buy from eBay you'll have to pay taxes and it's a pain to track every individual order but I've started ordering from eBay recently and it's alright but you'll have to pay taxes, if you buy from a proxy you might avoid taxes
Booster box prices are kiked it's unavoidable, you'll be spending on average 10-12k yen or more at times.
Finally depending on the size and weight on your package EMS Shipping fees can range from $60-90 for a small package to a whopping $300 for a Giga huge package for one I had back in February with the team rocket suitcase and all those booster boxes and doujins
Not going to mention my proxy but the hint is D.
Also one more thing TBC in the next post
>>
the way some people pay 100x the price of a card because a 3rd party company gives it a number of 10 needs to be studied some day
>>
>>59229685
>>59229710
If you attempt to buy from a Japanese flea market you'll get hit with extra fees and on top of that due to proxy services not operating 24/7 (auctions are an exception) Japs might snipe stuff from you. I had N's zekrom sniped from me over five fucking times in the past few months and now the price has gone up
That should be everything
You'll have to find the list of jap shops on your own I don't want fucking scalpers finding this post, eBay is more convenient that way
Tldr booster boxes are overpriced even Japs are complaining they can't even get ONE box. If you use a proxy their site lists all of the fees plus consolidating and the WEIGHT of your package that's a big one plus SHIPPING. THEN YOU MIGHT have to deal with CUSTOMS kikes.
eBay is convenient but you have to pay taxes.
Japanese flea markets are useful because you might find cheap cards like I did with pokekyun gardes. eBay helped me find that Chinese acerola and others
Bought tons of cards from Japanese card shops too, they sometimes have good deals like the golden MUR garde I snagged.
Also forgot to mention snkrdunk is a thing but they charge a ton of extra bullshit prices
>>
>>59229685
Tariffs aren't built into the prices for me but if you're an amerishart I believe they are. Some Japanese sites and eBay sellers have been giving out American exclusive discount codes because of the tariff bullshit if you're worried about that
>>
>>59229710
>>59229728
Wow, thanks dude! This is great information.
Two questions though: when you say "Japanese flea markets" you mean online auction sites, or is it a different thing? And why do you suggest avoiding middleman services? I've used Fromjapan in the past and don't recall having an issue getting stuff, other than that Yahoku thing where sellers can block you from bidding.

>>59229732
I am American, so that's good to know. I guess my fear has simply been buying something and finding out I owe more money on once it's delivered.
>>
>>59229670
Nice Gardevoirs. I'm trying to collect as many of her as I can, but I really only buy in person. Maybe I could just get a lot of the cheaper ones online and save myself the hassle since vendors and shows likely wouldn't but or display them.
>>
>>59229771
Yeah online auction sites although Mercari etc counts too
That's the term the Japs use
>>
>>59229774
I highly suggest you start ordering gardevoirs online before the prices skyrocket even higher I've given up on getting that tag team garde. I'm not spending $800+ on that fucking card.
>>
>>59229771
I suggest avoiding *SOME* proxies since they keep adding more bullshit fees. I've heard horrible stories about fromJapan and zenmarket.
>>
>>59229780
I'm fairly new into the hobby and haven't spend much on a single card yet beyond the Paldean Fates Gardevoir and the Radiant Collection Megas. I have no delusions of buying those crazy heavy hitters, but the bigger issue those Sun and Moon era trainers, and earlier, are just going to be out of reach unless I find them MP or something.
>>
>>59229432
Are Neo cards the best looking sets because any time I see them they're just dope
>>
>>59229784
Ah yeah, I actually got on with FromJapan specifically because they had less bullshit fees but it's a been a minute since I ordered anything with them. White Rabbit Express used to be great with very few fees as well.

>>59229792
In my opinion they're the most well rounded for sure. Layout is clean and simple with just a little bit of flair, the art was at it's peak and the foil really compliments it, and the sets themselves all have plenty of nice cards. From the pretty simple designs of Genesis to the experimental Destiny, it really does have it all.
>>
Main LCS must have had someone cashing out everything, it was entirely stocked with IRs and SIRs. If I had the budget I could have spent another $200 easily. Passed on that Garchomp V with Cynthia, the Chandelure, and some Zamazenta for good measure. Maybe next time.
>>
>>59229808
Honestly the Shining cards are so striking. I remember pulling my Shining Steelix as a kid and was flabbergasted by it. I'd kill for the Shining Mewtwo and Kabutops. I think the Charizard is the worst looking one and it's still a good looking card.

I literally only got back into collecting at the end of February after a decade of being gone from the hobby. Now I have a shit ton of gardevoirs and even a sunbreon. Sometimes it's now or never. Speaking of those trainer cards just picked up that full art sun and moon base Lillie for $50 this morning at LP.
Those newer SAR gardevoirs are cheap for now but they'll shoot up eventually

I kind of agree though it pains me to say as Zard was a childhood pull and the rarest card I owned for a long time. I really like the idea of like, "rare Pokemon flying away" but I wish he was still somewhat facing the frame.
Still it's unique among Charizard cards for that.

I love that Lillie too. I think it's more just a casual thing for me, I buy for SRP when I can find it, and I buy the cards when I see them. IRs are shooting up though, the Mantyke and Poliwhirl have like doubled recently. Glad I got the Kuroimori Articuno for now, her art for stuff is exceptional and they let her do that Iris SIR.

I'm in a similar situation except for the crashout and organizing my collection as I've yet to do that. Almost the same timeline too.
Trust me it gets better. Right now I don't even have a job as I started my own business, and I've even sold part of my collection for money, but I know that those cards sold I can get back later when I'm doing better. There was a store near me that was using some sort of application to determine price. I was curious what it was since the prices were the going rate and others about $20 to $30 more than tcgplayer. They didn't sell much older stuff unfortunately.
Another store went straight to tcgplayer which was perfect for me since I prefer buying in person and not paying/waiting for shipping. That shop was much better and had older stuff for sale. It was nice.

Mega Gengar is a pump scheme maybe but Gengar has always been pretty big. I pulled Mega Gardevoir, if I ever grade a card it'd be that one because my specimen looks like a 10.

For these metal cards you genuinely need to have them slabbed by psa or cgc, they have these special holders for them because every other storage method damages the card over time.

Cards today. Never been a Raticate guy so I wasn't thrilled but the more I look at it the more I like it.
Roxie is surprisingly cheap, she's one of my top gym leaders of all time.

Some chink in Toronto got his store broken into
All the YouTube comments are saying it's an inside job insurance scam like that one jewtuber
>>
>>59234438
Even if it's not an insurance scam, if in 2026 you don't invest in jewelry-tier security for your card shop and you don't put everything in a safe after each business day, you not only deserve to be robbed, but you also deserve to be suspected a scammer.

If you are wandering the PSA cert code for this card is 88102954
Whoever took the pic didn't fully censor the barcode, and all I did is just extend the barcode and have a barcode decoder decipher the cert number.

>>
>>59234676
Or you could have just read the title to know it’s fake lol
>>
>>59234681
Its really funny because they actually bother to copy a real cert label and somehow fucked up the most obvious shite.
